This invention relates to a method for preparing a polyamic acid solution with a controlled molecular weight by polymerizing biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and aromatic diamine in the presence of a lower alcohol. Conventionally, an aromatic polyamic acid solution has been prepared by mixing an aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydride and an aromatic diamine at 160°C in an organic solvent such as N-methylpyrrolidone or dimethylformamide.
A well-known method is to prepare a polyamic acid solution in which polyamic acid is uniformly dissolved by polymerizing at the following polymerization temperature. However, when a polyamic acid solution is prepared by polymerizing biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and an aromatic diamine using a known preparation method, the resulting polymer solution has a high rotational viscosity. When using the solution as a coating varnish, it was difficult to uniformly apply the polyamic acid solution, resulting in poor coating workability. Therefore, it was considered to reduce the molecular weight of polyamic acid as much as possible to lower the viscosity of the polyamic acid solution, but there is no way to effectively adjust the molecular weight of polyamic acid in the preparation of the polyamic acid solution mentioned above. , was almost unknown. The inventors have discovered that the molecular weight of polyamic acid to be produced can be controlled by a method in which biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and aromatic diamine are polymerized in dimethylformamide or N-methylpyrrolidone solvent. Moreover, as a result of various studies on methods for adjusting the rotational viscosity of a polyamic acid solution, it was discovered that the molecular weight of polyamic acid can be adjusted by allowing a lower alcohol to be present during polymerization, and the present invention was made based on this research. completed. According to the method of this invention, the molecular weight of the polyamic acid produced can be freely adjusted by adding a lower alcohol, and therefore the rotational viscosity of the polyamic acid solution can be adjusted. . Since the polyamic acid solution obtained by the method of this invention contains aromatic polyamic acid obtained by polymerizing biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and aromatic diamine, it can be used as a coating varnish. It can be used as a polyimide film to form a polyimide film with excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, electrical insulation, and mechanical strength. Further, according to the method of the present invention, it is possible to prepare a highly concentrated polyamic acid solution in which the concentration of aromatic polyamic acid is 5 to 40% by weight, and this highly concentrated polyamic acid solution does not cause precipitation. It can be stored as a uniform solution for more than two months. This invention will be explained in more detail below. The polymerization solvent used in this invention is dimethylformamide or N-methylpyrrolidone.
It is a mixed solvent consisting of 100 parts by weight and 5 to 70 parts by weight of a lower alcohol. In the method of this invention, if the amount of lower alcohol used is more than 70 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of dimethylformamide or N-methylpyrrolidone, the rate of the polymerization reaction may become slow;
This is not suitable because the produced polyamic acid separates out from the reaction solution and precipitates. In the method of the present invention, as the proportion of lower alcohol used in the solvent increases, the molecular weight (indicated by logarithmic viscosity) of polyamic acid decreases, and the rotational viscosity of the polyamic acid solution decreases. The lower alcohol is an alkyl alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and includes, for example, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, propyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, and in particular,
Ethyl alcohol is most suitable because it can effectively control the molecular weight. In the method of this invention, in the mixed solvent,
Biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and aromatic diamine are mixed at a reaction temperature of 100°C or less, preferably 50°C.
Polyamic acid solution is prepared by polymerization at ~60°C. The above-mentioned biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride includes 2,3,3',4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride, 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride , and mixtures thereof. Further, as the aromatic diamine, the general formula

Aromatic diamines represented by (divalent groups such as CO-, -SO2- , -SO-, -CH2- , etc.) are preferred. In particular, aromatic diamines include 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether, 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl thioether, 4,4'-diaminobenzophenone, 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl sulfone,
4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane is preferred, and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether is most preferred. In the method of this invention, it is optimal to use approximately equal moles of biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and aromatic diamine, but
It does not matter if one of the monomer components exceeds the other monomer component by up to 5 mol %, especially up to 2.5 mol %. In the method of the present invention, if the reaction temperature is higher than 100° C., the resulting polymer will have many imide bonds, and such a polymer will precipitate out of the reaction solution, which is not suitable. In the method of this invention, it is preferable to use monomer components such that the polymer concentration in the reaction solution is 5 to 40% by weight, particularly 7 to 35% by weight. The polymer in the polyamic acid solution obtained by the method of this invention has the following general formula: (However, R is a divalent aromatic residue excluding the amino group of an aromatic diamine.) Polyamic acid having at least 80%, particularly 90% or more of repeating units. According to the method of this invention, the polymer in the polyamic acid solution has a logarithmic viscosity (concentration: 0.5 g/100 ml).

25° C.) can be freely changed from about 0.5 to 5, particularly within the range of about 0.5 to 3. Therefore, according to the method of the present invention, the rotational viscosity (25° C.) of the polyamic acid solution can be adjusted within the range of 20 to 20,000 poise. In the method of this invention, the reaction time is preferably 0.5 to 20 hours, particularly 0.5 to 10 hours, and the reaction pressure may be normal pressure or elevated pressure. The polyamic acid solution obtained by the method of this invention can be suitably used as it is as a coating varnish for electric wires, circuit boards, etc., and a polyimide film can be formed by coating it. . Examples and comparative examples are shown below. Examples 1 to 8 Using 8.826 g of 3,3',4,4'-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride and 6.007 g of 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether, the composition and amount used are shown in Table 1. A polyamic acid solution was prepared by polymerizing in a mixed solvent at normal pressure for the reaction times shown in Table 1.
