Abstract

PURPOSE:To estimate the slider floating characteristic concerning the whole surface of a magnetic disk by shifting a floating slider of a magnetic head over the whole of the radius of the disk while the slider is rotated by the low number of revolutions, measuring the output of an acoustic emission sensor fitted to a magnetic head arm and next, executing the same measurement to rotate the magnetic disk successively by the higher number of revolutions. CONSTITUTION:A disk 1 is low rotated by a rotating shaft 7. Then, a moving stage 5 is shifted at the range of the radius as a whole of the disk in the direction of an arrow 8, the vibration of a floating slider 2 is detected through an arm 3 by an AE sensor 4 and the signal processing is executed by a signal processing device 6. Further, the number of revolutions is raised and the same operation is executed. When the relation of the size of the output signal of the AE sensor 4 and the floating height is obtained by using the glass disk, etc., beforehand, the number of revolutions is gradually raised, the measurement of the AE sensor output is repeated, and thereby, the floating characteristic of the whole of the surface of the disk 1 can be measured.

Conventionally, to measure the flying characteristics of magnetic disks, an acoustic emission sensor (
(hereinafter referred to as AE sensor) is attached, the rotation speed of the disk is gradually increased, and the arm vibrates due to the contact of the disk with the floating slider attached to the tip or the action of the airflow generated by the rotation of the disk. This was done by reading the output signal from the AE sensor with an effective value voltmeter or the like. However, the flying characteristics obtained in this manner can only be evaluated for a portion of the disk corresponding to the width of the floating slider, and therefore have the disadvantage that the entire disk surface cannot be evaluated.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION An object of the present invention is to provide a method for measuring flying characteristics that can eliminate the above-mentioned drawbacks and evaluate the flying characteristics of a slider over the entire surface of a magnetic disk.

According to the present invention, the floating slider of the magnetic head is moved over the entire radius of the disk while rotating the magnetic disk at a low rotational speed, and the output of the AE sensor attached to the magnetic head arm is measured, and then the magnetic disk is sequentially rotated. By repeating the operation of rotating at a high rotational speed and making similar measurements, it becomes possible to evaluate the flying characteristics of the entire disk surface, thereby achieving the above objective.

FIG. 1 shows an apparatus for an embodiment of the invention, in which a magnetic disk l to be measured is attached to a rotating shaft 7. In FIG. An AE sensor 4 is attached to an arm 3 that supports a floating slider 2 of a magnetic head, which is arranged opposite to the surface of the disk 1. The AE sensor 4 is connected to a signal processing device 6. The arm 3 is fixed to a movable stage 5,
It can be moved in the radial direction of the disk l as shown by arrow 8. Using such a device, the disk 1 is rotated at a low speed by the rotating shaft 7. At that time, move the movable stage 5 in the direction of the arrow 8 over the entire radius of the disk,
The vibration of the floating slider 2 is transmitted to the AE sensor 4 via the arm 3.
The relationship between the magnitude of the output signal of the AE sensor 4 and the flying height must be determined in advance using a glass disk or the like. For example, the flying characteristics of the entire surface of the disk 1 can be measured by gradually increasing the rotational speed and repeating the measurement of the AE sensor output. At that time, the floating slider 2 becomes low in the air above a certain number of rotations, and when the arm 3 is moved in the disk radial direction, if there is a protrusion on the surface of the disk 1 due to the flying height, the floating slider 2 will come into contact with it, making it possible to detect the protrusion. This can be done on the entire disk surface.

The present invention makes it possible to measure the flying characteristics of the entire disk surface by moving the floating slider in the radial direction of the disk while the magnetic disk is rotating at the same rotation speed. By moving the floating slider in the radial direction at a certain rotation speed, there is an effect that protrusions on the entire disk surface can be detected at the same time.
