The present invention relates to the production of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), and specifically to a process for the isolation of this compound from the reaction product of methanol and a hydrocarbon fraction containing isobutene. It is known that methyl tert-butyl ether is a valuable material for industry. Specifically, it can be incorporated into fuels for controlled ignition engines to obtain high octane gasoline, particularly lead-free or low-lead gasoline. The difficulty in producing it stems from the fact that the reaction between isobutene and methanol is an equilibrium reaction. It is therefore advantageous to carry out the operation in the presence of an excess of one of the reactants, for example methanol. However, when operating with an excess of methanol or an equimolar mixture of the reactants, methyl tert-butyl ether, methanol and a hydrocarbon (e.g. isobutene in the process charge, or in some cases A mixture containing C 4 hydrocarbons) with unconverted isobutene is obtained. Fractionation of these compounds by distillation is difficult to carry out due to the formation of azeotropes: methanol/methyl tert-butyl ether azeotrope and C 4 hydrocarbon/methanol azeotrope. A number of proposals have been made, none of which are entirely satisfactory. For example, washing with water may remove most of the methanol, but it leaves traces of water in the MTBE, which is extremely unsuitable for adding this ether to automotive gasoline. That's true. Distillation of methanol/MTBE azeotrope is 1
Firstly, the methanol content of this azeotrope is low even when operating under high pressure, and secondly, this azeotrope must be recycled to the reactor, which is not convenient for the progress of the reaction. Due to the fact that it is not advantageous. The distillation of the neat methanol/MTBE/C 4 hydrocarbon mixture leaving the reaction zone of methanol and C 4 fractions can also be carried out under high pressure and with high reflux ratios. The methanol/ C4 hydrocarbon azeotrope has a low methanol content, so it is not efficient. If the distillation of the MTBE/methanol/C 4 hydrocarbon mixture is carried out using suitable techniques, e.g. by condensing the first distillate vapor which has been freed of its methanol content by washing with water and using it as reflux, this distillation is much more efficient. It has been found to be efficient, and this constitutes the object of the present invention. This fact is illustrated, for example, in the table below. This table is MTBE (53
%), methanol (7.8%), C4 hydrocarbons (39.2
%) in a distillation column with 40 stages,
Distillation was carried out twice under a pressure of 16 atm and with the same reflux ratio of 1.1, the first time being a normal reflux, and the second one being a normal reflux.
This is a summary of the results when using reflux after removing methanol by washing with water. In both cases, the C 4 hydrocarbons are almost completely recovered at the top of the distillation column.

It is. Therefore, the method of the present invention consists of the following steps. Namely: (a) MTBE, methanol and C 4
(b) charging the mixture to be fractionated containing hydrocarbons and residual isobutene into a distillation zone at an intermediate point; (b) MTBE at the base of said zone;
(c) this mixture is washed with water in a washing zone; ( d ) the condensed
separating a C 4 hydrocarbon fraction from the condensed water/methanol fraction; (e) returning a portion of the condensed and separated C 4 hydrocarbon fraction to the distillation zone, and at least 25% of this portion being transferred to said zone; (f) condensing and discharging another portion of the separated hydrocarbon fraction; and (g) distilling the water/methanol fraction to recover the water and methanol separately. The water thus recovered is at least partially returned to the washing zone and the methanol is at least partially returned to the reactor for MTBE production. The discharged hydrocarbon fraction usually no longer contains sufficient isobutene to warrant recycling. Therefore, this can be optionally supplemented with additional water, preferably in the process.
After washing with the water collected in (g), it can be used for other purposes. Therefore, an important feature of the process is that at least a portion of the hydrocarbon fraction that is condensed and separated from the water/methanol phase is returned to the distillation zone as reflux. This fraction, without any drying,
It can be returned as is, which is an important advantage of this method. The point in the distillation column at which this fraction is introduced is somewhat important. Preferably, all of this fraction is fed at the top of the column. However, in some cases, a part of it is placed at the top,
Another portion can be injected into the column at least at one point below it. However, it shall not be below the introduction point of the preparation. Reflux ratio also plays an important role. This ratio is defined as the ratio of the amount by weight of the hydrocarbon phase (step e) returned to the distillation column to the amount by weight of the hydrocarbon phase (step f) discharged from the apparatus, advantageously is 0.3~10, preferably 0.5~
Selected between 5. Washing the effluent from the top of the distillation column with water
This is another important feature of this law. This washing may be carried out on the effluent from the distillation zone before it is cooled and condensed. It can also be carried out after condensation of the effluent. The cleaning method can be a known method, e.g. flow mixing, countercurrent contact zone,
A spray tower, etc. is fine. Because methanol has high solubility in water,
The amount of water is not necessarily very large. The amount will depend on the inherent efficiency of the cleaning technique selected and the desired performance. For economic reasons,
Preferably at least 50%, more advantageously at least 90%, of the methanol present in the effluent from the top of the distillation zone is removed. If desired, after the hydrocarbon fraction discharged from the process has been separated from the fraction returned as reflux, it may be washed again with water to supplement the cleaning. Distillation is carried out at superatmospheric pressures, e.g. 2-30 bar absolute;
Preferably it is carried out at a pressure of 4 to 20 bar absolute, in order to take advantage of the more advantageous composition of the methanol/C 4 hydrocarbon azeotrope. The temperature at the top and bottom of the distillation column depends on the pressure chosen. Within the above preferred pressure ranges, the temperature at the top should be between 35 and 105°C and the temperature at the bottom between 100 and 190°C. The removal of MTBE is carried out in liquid state from the bottom of the distillation column, or at the base of the column, but
At the bottom of the column or above the liquid phase of the reboiler, the steam can be taken off and carried out in the steam state. The reaction of methanol with the C 4 cut of isobutene is well known and therefore does not require a detailed explanation here. This is often between 20 and
It is carried out at 130° C. in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as a sulfonic acid ion exchange resin in acid form.
The C 4 cut with an isobutene content comprised, for example, between 20 and 70% by weight may be any of the cuts already recommended for this type of reaction. For example, it may be derived from a cracking operation, a steam cracking operation, or a hydrocarbon dehydrogenation operation. The invention is illustrated by means of the accompanying figures, given by way of example. The mixture to be separated (MTBE, methanol, C4
(hydrocarbons) are charged through a pipe 1 into a distillation column 2 heated by a heat exchanger 3. Take out MTBE from pipe 4 at the bottom. Conduit 5 at the top
Take out more steam. This steam is condensed in a condenser 6 cooled with water or other water. The condensate is washed in line 8 with water introduced via line 7 or 17. This water can be fresh water or water that is recirculated via line 9 shown in dotted lines. The washed condensate is separated into two phases in a decanter 10. Remove the upper hydrocarbon phase and line 1
It is divided into the reflux from line 1 and the distillate from line 12. The latter is discharged from the process after being washed with additional water in a washer 18 which is supplied with water, possibly via line 19 (preferably coming from line 16). This water is then transferred to pipe 20
You can return to Route 9 via . The lower liquid phase, i.e. the water/methanol phase, is passed through line 13 to a distillation column 14 operating under known conditions, for example at atmospheric pressure.
Send via . At the top, methanol is recovered through line 15. This may be returned to the reactor for MTBE production. Water is discharged at the bottom of the tower by line 16. Example 1 It has the following composition: isobutane: 2.20 isobutene: 1.84 butene-1: 19.41 butane: 6.50 trans-butene-2: 7.88 cis-butene-2: 3.55 MTBE: 53.2 methanol: 4.92 other: 0.5, The effluent from the reactor for MTBE synthesis was operated under a pressure of 4.7 atm and a diameter of 110
The 20th stage (from the bottom) of a 50-stage column 2 with bubble-trays of mm is charged at a rate of 5000 g/h. The heat supply to the boiler of the column is adjusted so that almost all of the paraffinic and olefinic hydrocarbons with 4 carbon atoms emerge at the top. Under these conditions, a temperature curve forms within the column. Its limits are 45°C for the top and 105°C for the bottom. In the path of the steam from the top, before the condenser, liquid water is injected at a rate of 925 g/h. After the condenser, the condensed top steam and the injected water are separated into two liquid phases in a reflux flask specially adapted for proper decanting. The upper liquid phase, 6400 g/h, is recycled as reflux to the top of the column. A second portion of this liquid phase, 5800 g/h, is recycled to the 30th stage of the column.
2053g/ which constitutes the third part i.e. distillate
h from the device. For distillate analysis, this is
This indicates that it is composed of 98% C4 hydrocarbons. The only impurities present in trace form are methanol and MTBE. The lower liquid phase consists of an aqueous solution of methanol. This is the methanol discharged from the top of the tower.
Contains over 90%. This liquid phase is sent to an attached distillation column 14 having 40 plates. This allows methanol to be regenerated and recycled into the reactor for MTBE synthesis. The product from the bottom of column 2 leaves the apparatus with an average flow rate of 2704 g/h. this is
MTBE98.3%, C4 hydrocarbons 0.58%, methanol
0.2% and various substances heavier than methanol 0.92%
It consists of Example 2 The composition and flow rate of the feed material and the shape of the distillation column were the same as in Example 1.
A similar distillation is carried out at an operating pressure of 10 atm. The operation of column 2 is again adjusted so that almost all of the C 4 hydrocarbons come out at the top. The resulting temperature curve is from 75℃ at the top to 75℃ at the bottom.
It extends up to 150℃. Water from the final washing of the distillate is placed in the path of the steam from the top.
After injection at 1000 g/h and condensation and decanting of this vapor at 65 °C, 2050 g of the upper liquid phase (with methanol above 90 °C removed) is returned as reflux into the distillation column and the second part 2480 g is returned to the 30th stage of the column, and the third fraction (2053 g on average) making up the distillate is then fed to the mixing and decanting unit.
Therefore, final washing with 1000 g/h of water is performed. After this final wash, the distillate is virtually pure C4.
It will consist of hydrocarbons, and its methanol content will be less than 50 ppm. MTBE is removed at the bottom of column 2. Its properties are comparable to those shown in Example 1.
