The present invention relates to a method for producing novel polymer compositions with good impact resistance, low permeability to gases and high softening temperatures. More specifically, the composition comprises an olefinically unsaturated nitrile, a vinyl aromatic monomer, indene, and a preformed diene rubber.
This invention relates to a method for producing a composition with high softening and impact resistance. The novel polymerization products of the present invention are prepared by polymerizing an olefinically unsaturated nitrile such as acrylonitrile, a vinyl aromatic monomer such as styrene, and indene in the presence of a preformed conjugated diene rubber. Conjugated dienes useful in the present invention include 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, bromoprene, cyanoprene, 2,3-dimethylbutadiene, and the like. The most preferred are butadiene and isoprene because of their excellent polymerizability. Olefinically unsaturated nitriles useful in the present invention have the structural formula (wherein R is hydrogen, a lower alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or a halogen). Such compounds include acrylonitrile, alpha-chloroacrylonitrile, alpha-fluoroacrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, ethacrylonitrile, and the like. The most preferred olefinically unsaturated nitrile is
It is acrylonitrile. Vinyl aromatic monomers useful in the present invention include styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, vinyltoluene, vinylxylene, and the like. Most preferred is styrene. Indene (1-H-indene) and coumaron (2,3-benzofuran) and mixtures are useful. Most preferred is indene. The polymerizable composition of the present invention can be produced using any known polymerization technique including bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, emulsion polymerization or suspension polymerization; techniques using batch, continuous or intermittent addition of monomers and other components. It can also be manufactured using technology. The preferred method is
Emulsion polymerization or suspension polymerization in an aqueous medium. The polymerization is carried out in an aqueous medium in the presence of an emulsifying and/or suspending agent and a free radical-generating polymerization initiator, from about 0 to
It is carried out in the substantial absence of molecular oxygen at a temperature of 100°C. Rubbery polymers useful in the present invention include homopolymers of the conjugated diene monomers described above, as well as copolymers of these monomers with other monomer components, such as acrylonitrile, styrene, ethyl acrylate, and mixtures thereof. be.
(Provided that at least 50% by weight of total monomers of conjugated diene monomers are present.) Preferred polymer compositions embodied herein include (A) Structural Formula (B) about 15-70% styrene, and (C) about 5-20% indene. (However, the percentages indicated in (A), (B) and (C) are based on the combined weight of (A), (B) and (C)). (D) a rubber comprising at least 50% by weight of a conjugated diene monomer selected from the group consisting of butadiene and isoprene and up to 50% by weight of at least one component selected from the group consisting of styrene, acrylonitrile, and ethyl acrylate. It is obtained by polymerization in the presence of 1 to 40 parts by weight of a polymer. More specifically, the acrylonitrile, styrene and indene of the present invention are polymerized in the presence of a preformed rubbery copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile to provide superior impact resistance and improved ASTM heat distortion temperatures. This can be explained by producing a product with Preferred rubbery copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile contain 50% or more by weight polymerized butadiene, based on the combined weight of butadiene and acrylonitrile. More preferably, the rubbery copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile is from 50 to 90% by weight, most preferably from 60 to 80% by weight.
Contains polymerized butadiene. It is also preferred to use from 1 to 40 parts by weight, more preferably from 1 to 20 parts by weight, of the rubbery diene polymer for each 100 parts of the combination of olefinically unsaturated nitrile, vinyl aromatic monomer and indene. . It has been found that as the relative amount of rubbery diene polymer is increased in the final polymer product, impact resistance increases and gas and vapor barrier properties decrease somewhat. It is generally preferred to use just enough rubbery diene polymer to impart the desired impact resistance to the polymer product and to maintain optimal gas and vapor barrier properties in the polymer product. The novel polymeric products of the present invention can be prepared by any of the conventional methods used for known thermoplastic polymeric materials, such as extrusion casting, milling, molding, drawing, blow molding, etc. Easily processed into thermoplastic materials that are thermoformed into a wide variety of useful products.
The polymerization products of the present invention have excellent solvent and impact resistance and low permeability to gases and vapors, making them useful in the packaging industry, and especially in the packaging of bottles, films, sheets, and other molds. It is useful in the manufacturing of containers and packaging for liquids and solids. In the following examples, component amounts are given in parts by weight unless otherwise specified. Example 1 A A rubber latex was made using the following ingredients and procedures. Ingredients Butadiene 70 Acrylonitrile 30 Soap flakes 1.4 Water 200 Daxad 11 (polyalkylnaphthalene sulfonic acid sodium Medway & Alumi Co.) 0.1 Versene Fe-3 (sodium salt of diethanolglycine Dow Chemical Co.)
0.05 tert-dodecyl mercaptan 0.65 Azobisisobutyronitrile 0.4 The polymerization was carried out at a temperature of 50 DEG C. under a nitrogen atmosphere in a stirred polymerization reactor up to a conversion of about 90%. The resulting latex was stripped of volatiles under reduced pressure at 33°C for 2 hours. B A portion of the rubber latex from A above was used in the production of acrylonitrile-styrene-indene resin from the following components. Ingredients Acrylonitrile 40 Styrene 50 Indene 10 Latex of A above (solid content base) 15 Water 220 Gafac RE-610 * (Emulsifier) 2.0 Limonene Dimercaptan 0.04 t-Butyl peroxypivalate 0.30 *R-O- (CH 2 CH 2 O−) o PO 3 M 2 and [R−O
-( CH2CH2O- ) o ] 2PO2M mixture (where n is a number from 1 to 40, R is an alkyl group or an aralkyl group, preferably a menylphenyl group, and M is a hydrogen, ammonia or an alkali metal.
It was sold at GAFCo. ) The polymerization was carried out in a substantially oxygen-free atmosphere (nitrogen) at 60° C. for 16 hours with constant stirring using a dilute aqueous KOH solution to a pH of 7. The resulting latex was coagulated with hot aqueous aluminum sulfate solution, and the crumbs were washed with water and methanol and dried in a vacuum oven. The dry polymer has an ASTM heat distortion temperature (D-
64A, 264psi), Izot impact strength of 0.81 foot pounds per inch of notch (ASTM D-
256), an ASTM D-790 flexural strength of 10.4 x 103 psi, and an ASTM D-638 tensile strength of 6.83 x 103 psi. C The above procedure B was repeated except that styrene/acrylonitrile/indene was used in a weight ratio of 45/40/15. The resulting polymer had the following properties. ASTM heat deflection temperature of 101°C, Izotsu impact strength notch 1.14 foot pounds per inch, bending strength 10.2 x 103 psi, tensile strength 6.93 x 103 psi, and Brabender plasticorder torque 1800 mg (220
℃35rpm). D. The procedure of B above was repeated, except that a 50/50 weight ratio of styrene/acrylonitrile was used without indene to produce a resin outside the scope of the invention. The resulting resin had the following properties. ASTM heat deflection temperature of 96°C, isot impact strength of 0.15 foot pounds per inch notch, and bending strength of 5.84 x 10 3 psi. Example 2 A series of polymers were prepared following the procedure of Example 1B. The weight ratio of styrene/acrylonitrile/indene was varied. The resulting resin and some properties are shown in the table below.
