The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display cell. In particular, it relates to liquid crystal display cells filled with smectic materials exhibiting negative dielectric anisotropy. When a smectic substance is used in a sandwich-type liquid crystal cell, it takes a focal conic state and cannot be made sufficiently transparent, resulting in poor contrast and is not put into practical use as a liquid crystal display cell. This invention uses a smectic material having negative dielectric anisotropy and provides a smectic liquid crystal display cell with high contrast by providing an alignment inducing layer that induces homeotropic alignment on the inner surface provided with electrodes. . The liquid crystal display cell with internal electrodes provided by the present invention has a layer of smectic material exhibiting negative dielectric anisotropy, said layer being inserted between two plates having at least partially overlapping electrodes. and at least one of the plates is transparent and the surfaces of both plates are such that the layer assumes a substantially homeotropic alignment when the layer is converted from a non-smectic phase to a smectic phase by cooling in the absence of an applied electric field. A layer that induces alignment is formed. The following description will be made with reference to the accompanying drawings. Prior to explaining the examples, terms related to the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules will be explained. A homogeneous arrangement is one in which the axes of liquid crystal molecules are arranged more or less parallel to the plate surface, and a parallel homogeneous arrangement is one in which the axes of liquid crystal molecules are arranged parallel to the plate surface and parallel to each other. . Homeotropic alignment refers to an alignment in which the axes of liquid crystal molecules are perpendicular to the plate surface. The term tilt angle is also used with respect to this parallel homogeneous arrangement. This tilt angle is defined as the angle (acute angle) between the liquid crystal molecular axis of the liquid crystal layer and the plane of the plate surface. In the embodiment of FIG. 1 two glass plates 1, 2 are arranged with a layer 5 of liquid crystal material in between;
The envelope is secured by a peripheral seal 3 surrounding the periphery of layer 5 to form a hermetically sealed cell. The liquid crystal material can also be hermetically sealed within the cell by adding a pleochroic dye mixture as described below. The liquid crystal substance is filled into the cell through an opening formed by interrupting a portion of the periphery of the seal 3;
After filling, this opening is sealed with a plug 4 of, for example, indium. Alternatively, if the peripheral seal 3 is a fused glass frit seal, the opening may be metallized before filling the cell, in which case the opening may be sealed by soldering. Preferably, the peripheral seal 3 is made by fusing glass frit. That is, with proper selection of the glass frit, contamination of the liquid crystal by material leaching from the seal will be less than with seals made from some other materials, such as epoxy resin. The disadvantage of using glass frit seals is that some alignment technique must be applied before cell assembly, which is difficult to make to withstand the high temperatures required to melt the frit. be. Before bonding, the inner surfaces of the two plates are provided with transparent electrodes (not shown) of a design suitable for the desired display, so that an electric field can be applied through the thickness of at least selected parts of the liquid crystal layer. . For this purpose, the part of the electrode is configured to protrude beyond the area of the seal 3 and to allow an external connection. Before describing the invention, a cell using a liquid crystal with positive dielectric anisotropy will first be described, in which at least one, preferably both, of the plates 1, 2 are provided with a coating or other surface treatment; The liquid crystal molecules with positive dielectric anisotropy are arranged in a parallel homogeneous alignment state when the cell is converted from a non-smectic phase to a smectic phase by cooling in the absence of an applied electric field. . Generally, in order to obtain the desired parallel homogeneous molecular alignment, it is necessary to use an alignment method that provides a substantial tilt angle. For example, oblique deposition of silicon monoxide at an angle of about 25° to the substrate results in parallel homogeneous alignment without tilt angles in the nematic phase of 4-cyano-4'-n-octylbiphenyl. However, when the liquid crystal material is in the smectic phase, it produces a focal-conic state with relatively elongated cones (typically with an aspect ratio of 10:1) oriented in the alignment direction. . Smectic sequences are outwardly similar, and for this reason smectic sequences are called pseudohomogeneous sequences. These domains are displayed by the appearance of a characteristic elliptical pattern when the cell is observed under a polarized light microscope. Similarly, oblique deposition of silicon monoxide at an angle of 5° to 10° with respect to the substrate results in parallel homogeneous alignment of the nematic phase at an angle of inclination of about 25°, and in the smectic phase also aligned focal conic states. will occur. Such a focal conic state is inappropriate for this invention. However, if the tilt angle obtained in the deposition is sufficiently increased by further treatment of the deposited surface with a homeotropic alignment-inducing surfactant, the parallel homogeneous alignment will be retained even in the smectic state. It is possible to break through the limit value of the tilt angle. As an example, a 5° to 10° silicon monoxide deposited layer is coated with hexadecyl-trimethyl-ammonium bromide.
Treat with 0.1% methanol solution. This results in a tilt angle of 68° when measured conoscopically. In the manufacture of the test cell, this surfactant treatment was applied before the two plates were secured together with a peripheral seal. Processing consisted of dipping the plate into the solution, removing and drying. In industrial production, if possible, it is preferred to apply the surfactant after the envelope has been assembled. This is because it allows the use of a peripheral seal mode of the fused glass frit. It is desirable to fill the assembled cell with surfactant, dry it, and allow the residue to dry on the interior surfaces of the cell. In either case, it is necessary to assemble the cells so that the arrangement direction is parallel to the inclination angle with a specific relationship. The tilting of the liquid crystal molecules is due to tilted molecules in the smectic layer, and the molecular layer itself is parallel to the glass plate. (i.e., a state of pseudo-smectic C as shown at a in the upper left of Figure 2), or the molecules are perpendicular to the layer in the layer but the molecular layer itself is as shown in b in the upper right of Figure 2. It cannot be determined by measuring the angle of inclination using a conoscope. However, recent measurements using neutron scattering techniques have revealed that it is the smectic layer that is tilted in this case (conditions b and b on the right side of Figure 2). If a gradually increasing alternating electric field is applied to the cell, the tilt angle observed by the conoscopic figure will gradually increase up to a limiting value of about 88° (i.e., as indicated by c or d in Figure 2). substantially homeotropic sequences). The preferred excitation frequency is about 1 KHz. That is, below about 800 Hz, the conoscopic shapes appear diffuse, probably as a result of some electro-hydrodynamic instability. When viewed in transmission between crossed polarizers, the cell appears colored, best when the alignment direction is halfway between the two polarization directions. In order to obtain a uniform color over the entire surface of the cell, it is necessary that the thickness of the liquid crystal layer be very uniform. For a 20 μm thick layer, the cell appears brown-yellow when viewed perpendicular to the glass surface. This is for a 20 micron thick liquid crystal aligned at 68° from the glass surface and with birefringence n p = 1.52, n e = 1.675 (refractive index of 4-cyano-4'-n-octylbiphenyl).
This is consistent with the theoretical delay of 450nm. When an alternating current electric field is applied, the appearance changes sequentially from yellow to white to gray to black as the applied voltage gradually increases to about 150 to 180 volts (effective value). By choosing different thicknesses of the liquid crystal layer, the cells can be made to have different initial colors. In particular, thicker cells start from higher ranking colors in the Newtonian spectrum and therefore can sweep across a larger range of colors. For example, a cell with a 30 micron thick liquid crystal layer initially appears blue. Cells of the same thickness can also be made to exhibit different colors by the use of different smectic materials with different birefringence or by the use of different alignment techniques resulting in different initial tilt angles. It has been found that as the tilt angle increases from its initial value, this increased tilt angle remains after removal of the excitation field. If the tilt angle has not reached its maximum value, it can be further increased by applying a stronger excitation field. Thus, by appropriate switching, display cells with more than one contrasting color can be provided. By heating the cell to convert it from the smectic phase to the nematic phase and then cooling it again, the cell is switched to the first lower limit of the tilt angle. This can also be used to provide selected portions of the display cell with a reduced tilt angle by localized heating. This can be provided by intensity modulation of an imaging laser beam that is scanned over the surface of the cell. For this purpose, the wavelength of the laser is chosen such that it is absorbed by the liquid crystal or by a substance dissolved in or adjacent to the liquid crystal, such as a substance of one of the electrode layers. The cells described above can only be switched in one direction (increasing the tilt angle) by applying an alternating voltage; thermal cycling is used to switch in the opposite direction. However, some smectic materials have the property of exhibiting a crossover frequency effect, exhibiting positive dielectric anisotropy below the crossover frequency and negative dielectric anisotropy above the crossover frequency. Such materials can be electrically switched in both directions. An example of such a substance is 4-n-pentylphenyl-2'-
Chloro-4'-(6-hexyl-2-naphthoyloxy)benzoate. It is. That is, it is a monotropic liquid crystal having the following phase transition temperature. :C-
N68.6°C: Sa-N, 53.5°C: N-1, 178.9°C The table below shows that for this material the crossover frequency effect is also present in the nematic phase. This crossover frequency effect persists when the material is cooled to convert from the nematic phase to the smectic phase, but the critical voltage is much higher.

When the crystal layer is maintained at
Then, by applying an alternating current voltage with a frequency of 4.2 KHz or higher, the tilt angle decreases again to its lower limit. Cells with a portion in one state and a remainder in the other have been found to remain unchanged for long periods of time without obvious deterioration, and therefore storage can be assumed to be persistent. . In the present invention, as described above, a liquid crystal display cell is manufactured by introducing a smectic liquid crystal material exhibiting negative dielectric anisotropy. The inner major surfaces of one or preferably both of the plates 1, 2 of FIG. When the smectic phase is converted to the smectic phase,
Liquid crystal molecules with negative dielectric anisotropy have a substantially homeotropic alignment. A preferred surface treatment is that provided by coating the glass surface with lecithin or hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide solution. If a more inert, more suitable fused frit perimeter seal is used in the cell, this surface treatment can be applied after firing the frit by first filling the assembled cell with the required solution and then draining it. Ru. The cell is then filled with a suitable smectic material having negative dielectric anisotropy. This is for example 4-octyloxyphenyl-trans-
4-Butylcyclohexyl-1-carboxylate, this material has a small negative dielectric anisotropy and is a smectic A material in the temperature range of 28-49.1°C. Testing of this material in a 20 micron thick cell showed that in the overlap region between the electrodes, 30
It has been found that when the Hz signal voltage is increased to the region of 150 volts, the display transitions from a transparent texture to a transient schlieren texture. It is believed that this is produced either by the tilting of the smectic layer, as schematically indicated at a in Figure 3, or by the electric field inducing a pseudo-smectic C phase, as schematically indicated at b . It will be done. Whichever of these two interpretations is correct, it is believed that this configuration is highly metastable and that even small increases in electric field strength induce the formation of focal conic regions.
At a certain limiting voltage the broadening of this region is so rapid that the cell assumes a milky appearance that cannot be attributed to any form of dynamic scattering effect. It has been observed that increasing the signal frequency increases the switching threshold voltage. The transition is even more pronounced when the cell is placed between crossed polarizers. The initially displayed cell is black.
Once the metastable state is reached, the regions of the Schilleren structure have virtually identical Newtonian fringes.
Color is shown, but with varying degrees of saturation depending on the orientation of the area relative to the polarizer's principal axis. In some cases, the Schilleren structure is so transient that it cannot be detected. Then, when the focal conic region generation limit is reached, the display cell exhibits birefringence. The focal conic region can be returned to the homeotropic alignment by heating the cell sufficiently to cause a smectic-nematic phase change. Focalconic structures do not persist in the nematic phase, so when the cell is cooled sufficiently to recover the smectic phase,
In the absence of an applied electric field, the cell is restored to a homeotropic alignment. Since the cell is switched to the homeotropic state by the action of heat, selective switching to the homeotropic state can be achieved by the use of intensive heating as described above. This can be achieved by intensity modulation of the imaging laser beam scanning over the surface of the cell. For this purpose, the wavelength of the laser is selected such that it is absorbed by the liquid crystal medium or by a substance dissolved in or adjacent to the liquid crystal medium, such as a substance of one of the electrode layers. Cells with a portion in the homeotropic state and the remainder in the focalconic state have been found to remain unchanged for long periods of time without obvious deterioration, and storage is therefore believed to be indefinite. . The metastable Schlieren texture appearance can be eliminated by substantially unidirectionally biasing the homeotropic alignment to produce a tilt angle of slightly less than 90°. If this tilt angle is in the same direction over the entire surface, then the application of an alternating electric field will cause all the smectic molecules to start aligning in the same direction rather than in random directions.
This bias is achieved by first treating one of the surfaces to at least weakly promote homogeneous alignment of the nematic phase in a particular direction, and then covering this treated surface with an appropriate thickness of a coating that promotes homeotropic alignment. It can be given by The cells described above can only be switched in one direction by the application of an alternating electric field; thermal cycling is used to switch in the opposite direction. As mentioned above, some smectic materials have the property of exhibiting a crossover frequency effect, exhibiting positive dielectric anisotropy at frequencies below the crossover frequency and negative dielectric anisotropy at frequencies above the crossover frequency. show. Such materials allow switching in both directions. As mentioned above, an example of such a substance is
4-n-pentylphenyl-2'-chloro-4'-
(6-n-hexyl-2-naphthoyloxy)benzoate. A cell of the above basic structure, filled with this material (instead of the other liquid crystal materials mentioned above) and maintained at 52°C, can be transformed from a substantially homeotropic alignment to a focal plane by the application of an alternating current voltage at a frequency of 4.2 KHz or higher. It is possible to switch to a standard structure, and then
The original substantially homeotropic arrangement can be switched back to by applying an alternating current voltage at a frequency of 4.2 KHz or less. Both smectic substances exemplified so far are S A
It was a smectic substance exhibiting phases. However, a corresponding switching behavior can be obtained in cells containing the S B phase. An example of such a material is 4-n
-octyloxyphenyl-trans-4-n-
Pentylcyclohexyl-1-carboxylate, an enantiotropic liquid crystal with a phase transition temperature of :C
-S V , 42℃: S B -S A , 49.4℃: S A -N, 64.6
℃:N-179℃. FIG. 5 shows how the switching limit voltage at a frequency of 30 Hz varies with temperature for a cell with a 20 micron thick layer of this material. In this material, substantially the homeotropic sequence is restored by thermal cycling. The appearance of the cells can be modified as described above by introducing pleochroic dyes together with smectic substances. For example, about 1.3% 1-(4'-butyloxyaniline)-4-hydroxyanthraquinone and about 0.05% Waxolin Yellow A are introduced. When the cell is in the focal conic state, the color of the pleochroic dye is exhibited because the orientation of the molecules is substantially random in this state. Although the above description relates to experiments with specific smectic substances, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the use of such specific substances. Furthermore, although only Smectic A materials are illustrated in some embodiments, Smectic B materials can be used as well with increased voltage, provided the materials exhibit suitable dielectric anisotropy, and other suitable It is anticipated that other smectic substances may also be used. Although the principles of the invention have been described in connection with a particular device, this description is made by way of example only and is intended to limit the scope of the invention as described in the claims. It should be understood that this is not the case.
