Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the generation of floating dust in a head disk assembly and the volatilization of lubricant applied on a surface of a magnetic disk by applying a liquid lubricant on an internal surface of the head disk assembly. CONSTITUTION:On assembling a head disk assembly, a liquid lubricant is applied on an internal surface excluding a magnetic disk 1 and a magnetic head 2, dusts are attached to the internal surface of the head disk assembly and the generation of the floating dusts is prevented as much as possible. The applied liquid lubricant is partially volatilized in the device to form an atmosphere near to the saturation of molecules of the lubricant. Therefore, the volatilization of the lubricant applied on the surface of the disk is restricted and the frictional resistance for a long time can be maintained. The lubricant is applied to the magnetic disk 1 and the thickness of the lubricant on the magnetic disk is require to be controlled to a desired thickness and it is preferable to previously apply the lubricant to a desired thickness and thereafter incorporate it during assembling the head disk assembly.

There is a need to reduce the spacing between the magnetic head and the magnetic disk. When the magnetic head is in such a low flying state, dust generated inside the device can enter the space between the head and the disk, and the dust can cause the magnetic film to be worn out by friction, making it impossible to read information. be. For this reason, it is desirable that the inside of the magnetic disk drive be isolated from the outside environment and kept in a clean state. However, even if a magnetic disk device is assembled in a clean room, it is difficult to keep it in a clean state because dust enters from the atmosphere or from parts.

Additionally, if the device is completely sealed to prevent dust from entering as much as possible, there is a problem that the temperature inside the device will rise too much. considered desirable. However, in the case of this type of device, the lubricant on the surface of the magnetic disk evaporates due to the airflow inside the device and is discharged outside the device, causing a problem that the frictional strength of the magnetic disk decreases (for example, as described in U.S. Pat. 778,308
).

Dust that originally adhered to the parts of the HERADO disk assembly or dust that adhered inside the head disk assembly during device assembly may fly up as the disk rotates and adhere to the disk surface, or may enter between the magnetic disk and the magnetic head, causing magnetic This may cause friction damage to the disc. The device of the present invention applies a liquid lubricant to the inner surface of the head disk assembly except for the magnetic disk and the magnetic head by a spraying method or the like.
Dust adheres to the inner surface of the head disk assembly to prevent the generation of floating dust as much as possible. Further, the lubricant applied in this manner partially evaporates inside the device, creating an atmosphere that is nearly saturated with lubricant molecules. For this reason,
The volatilization of the lubricant applied to the disc surface is suppressed, making it possible to maintain durability over a long period of time.

In this example, a liquid lubricant (perfluoropolyether; average molecular f4,500) was used at approximately 20OA! 131 coated disks and parts for 20 Herad disk assemblies were prepared, and after going through the same cleaning process, the parts except the shroud were assembled. After that, the magnetic disk and magnetic head parts of 10 units were cleaned. The same liquid lubricant that was applied to the magnetic disk surface was applied to the inner surface of the head disk assembly. I also applied lubricant to the inside of the shroud before assembly. Note that the coating film thickness is approximately 1 μm. On the other hand, the remaining 10 units were assembled without applying liquid lubricant inside the head disk assembly.

The amount of dust generated in the head disk assembly of the above disk drive and the volatility of the lubricant on the surface of the magnetic disk were investigated. The amount of dust generated was evaluated by determining the number of floating W4 dust particles with a diameter of 0.2 μm or more generated 30 seconds after the start of rotation of the magnetic disk using a dust counter. Further, the volatility of the lubricant was evaluated by measuring the lubricant film in the initial state and after 6 months of operation using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and by the ratio thereof. The results are shown in Table 1.

Table 1 [Effects of the Invention] As is clear from the above examples, the magnetic disk device of the present invention generates less dust and significantly less lubricant volatilization than conventional devices. It is clear that a magnetic disk device in which a lubricant is applied to the inner surface of the head disk assembly is effective.
