Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a compsn. which does not emit harmful gas and has high frame retardance, by blending an ethylene/propylene copolymer, a halogen-free rubber or plastic, magnesium hydroxide and/or zinc borate, a carbonization accelerator and a vulcanizing agent (aid). CONSTITUTION:200-400pts.wt. magnesium hydroxide and/or zinc borate, 5-25pts.wt. halogen-free phosphate ester compd. or phosphate salt frit as a carbonization accelerator and a crosslinking agent (or a vulcanizing agent) are blended with 100pts.wt. mixture of an ethylene/propylene copolymer and a haogen-free rubber or plastic. When the surface of magnesium hydroxide is treated with a titanium coupling agent, elongation characteristics after crosslinking (or vulcanization) can be improved. The compsn. is molded into a sheet or tape. The outermost layer of a wire or cable is covered with said sheet or tape to enhance flame retardance and fireproofness.

(Means for solving the problems and their effects) The first aspect of the present invention is to prevent the generation of halogen gas, etc.
100 parts by weight of a mixture of ethylene propylene copolymer and halogen rubber/plastic is used as a base polymer, and 200 to 200 parts of magnesium hydroxide and/or zinc borate are added to this as a base polymer.
400 parts by weight, and 2 to 25 parts by weight of a phosphate ester compound or phosphate frit as a carbonization accelerator to actively form a carbonized layer to form a fireproof layer when the composition burns. It is a flame-retardant composition containing a crosslinking agent (or vulcanizing agent), and is used, for example, by extrusion coating on electric wires and cables, or processed into various molded products.

In addition, although this rubber/plastic mixture does not generate harmful gases, it is relatively flammable, so in order to make it flame retardant, titanate-treated magnesium hydroxide and/or zinc borate and phosphate ester are added. Specific amounts of compounds and/or phosphate frits were formulated. That is, if only magnesium hydroxide or zinc borate is added, the layer of the composition containing the compound will fall off once the water of crystallization in the compound has been released. However, by adding a phosphate ester compound and/or phosphate frit to this, carbonization of organic matter is promoted and a strong carbonized layer is formed.
Fire protection performance can be improved. At this time, preferably the ratio of magnesium hydroxide and zinc borate is 10:1.
It is preferable to set the ratio to 50:1.

For the above reasons, a mixture of ethylene propylene copolymer and rubber or plastic that does not contain halogen elements
Based on the parts by weight, 200 to 400 parts by weight of the inorganic hydrate and 5 to 25 parts by weight of the phosphoric acid ester compound and/or phosphate frit are added. More specifically, if the amount of inorganic hydrate is less than 200 parts by weight, flame retardancy will be unexpectedly low and the objective cannot be achieved, and if it exceeds 400 parts by weight, it will become too hard or have poor workability. This is because problems arise.

If the amount of the phosphoric acid ester compound and/or phosphate frit is less than 5 parts by weight, the carbonized film will be brittle, and if it exceeds 25 parts by weight, the flame retardance will deteriorate.

Next, referring to the second aspect of the present invention, when the above-mentioned flame-retardant composition is used to prevent the spread of fire in electric wires and cables, the composition is molded into a sheet or tape. After that, it is practical to wind this around the outermost layer of the electric wire/cable, and it is also preferred because it can be easily done when replacing the wire or cable.
