Abstract

There is disclosed herein a flat top end closure (12) for a liquid carrying container, which includes two oppositely disposed, overlapped outer closure panels (40,42), one being longer than the other, and two oppositely disposed, three-segment fold-in panels (44,46), one (44) of which serves as the pour spout when opened. Each of the three-segment fold-in panels (44,46) includes a substantially triangular panel portion (76,82) defined by converging diagonal score lines (72, 74, 78, 80) extending from the upper edge of the tubular container body (14), and a pair of fold-back panels (84, 88, 96, 98) integrally connected to and folded between the substantially triangular panel portions (76, 82) and the respective adjacent outer closure panels. The shorter (40) of the outer closure panels includes a plurality of equally spaced triangular shaped tufts (70) formed on the free edge (60) thereof so as to be squeezed upon abutment of the shorter panel (40) against one (84) of one pair of fold-back panels (88, 84) in the closing process, to thereby fill any fluid leakage channels which may tend to remain therebetween after sealing.

Sealed to facilitate tight packing of containers in layers, one layer on top of another, to minimize storage and loading space without the need for shipping trays between seed layers. Various force techniques have been used to assist in bending the fin in certain directions. For example, U.S. Patent No. 4.07'8,7
No. 15 has an inclined sealing fin with a stiffer fold on one side than on the other side to facilitate folding of the sealing fin from a vertical position to an inclined position. A top lid is disclosed.

In U.S. Pat. No. 4,206,867, instead of the two fold lines described above, a wide fold line is formed on one side of the cutout panel, and a conventional fold line is formed on the opposite side. In combination, they provide a folding panel of unequal strength.

In U.S. Pat. No. 4,211,357, the unequal left-to-right angle of the base of a folded gable or gusset panel causes one side of the panel to be lower than the other. U.S. Pat. No. 4,422,570 discloses an improved flat top for a paperboard container for liquid storage and transportation that does not require the sealing fins previously used in conjunction with flat top lids and has a spout. This is an example of a lid. Here an outer lifting tab is integrally formed into one of the outer lid panels for initial lifting of a portion of the spout, and a fold-in lid panel of another portion of the spout to facilitate the opening process. A lower lifting tab is formed on one of the lower lifting tabs. Improved opening characteristics for this construction type were described in US Patent Application No. 665.880, filed October 29, 1984.

In the past, various methods have been used to prevent such fluid leakage. The method is described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,120.
335, which is common for bottom end caps. According to it, the abutting panels are made slightly thicker, i.e., each having a width dimension slightly greater than half the overall width of the panel, which causes a "clumping" of material at the abutting edges; The formation of runoff grooves in the area between them is effectively prevented. However, the collection of edges in abutment results in the edges overlapping. This is insufficiently obvious for a sealed top end cap that should be openable with reasonable ease.

Another method was described in US Pat. No. 3.47 t O76 where triangular tufts were formed on the free cut edges of the inner lip panels of sealed cut top fins. According to this, the tufts assume a side-by-side relationship in order to extend into and between the horizontal cutting edges of adjacent inner lips;
and overlap the original grooved outer lips, or fin panels, folded toward each other around the inner cutting edge of the square.

Another object of the present invention is that the fluid leakage grooves between the abutting panel edges have a protrusion on the edge that is pressed between the edges to block the groove between the edges. An object of the present invention is to provide an improved flat-top end cap that is eliminated by spacing to one side.

Another object of the present invention is to provide overlapping flat-top end caps that are not formed from a sealed fin array configuration to block anticipated fluid leakage grooves while the end caps are sealed. On one side of the abutting edges near the typical spout, this is where anti-adhesion measures are taken to provide a sealed yet easily openable spout for the purpose. The present invention consists in providing an overlapping flat top cap formed of spaced apart triangular tufts.

(The next step in forming the side-seamed material into a container is illustrated in FIG.
The various parts of 2 are folded along various fold lines in the manner described below. As can be seen in FIG. 3, triangular closure panel portions 76 and 82 are folded toward each other along horizontal fold line 16 above the end of the container. At the same time, the outer top closure panels 40 and 42 are also folded towards each other along the horizontal fold line 16. As a result, the folded panel 88 portion is arranged so that the inner surface of the folded panel 88 portion and the outer top closing panel 40 are close to each other.
It is folded along the longitudinal fold line 30, and at the same time, the folded panel 84 section is folded along the diagonal fold line ys74 so that the inner surface of the channel section 84'' and the panel 42b section approach each other. . Two fold-out L7 panels 88 parts and 8
The outer surfaces rlji of the four sections approach the outside of the triangular pour panel 76 section such that the inner surface of the panel 88 section and the panel 62b section approach each other. Lifting tab 9

Please refer to Figures 5 to 7. To open the flat top end lid, first peel off the first lifting tab 50 from the front '#i1 panel 20, then remove the lifting tab 50 of the whistle 1 (jl!l panel 42b part and its underside). It will be appreciated that this is accomplished by lifting the panel 84 portions along their respective diagonal fold lines 56 and 74 and using the edge 86 to lift the edge 86 away from the edge 60 and the warped floor piece 70. This exposes the back side of the flap panel 84 section, thus allowing the second lifting tab 94 section defined by the free cutting edges 90 and 92 of the flap panel 88 section to rise.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS The flat-topped lid of the present invention has been provided with an anti-sealant treatment near the spout to facilitate opening of the spout during the folding process. It is clear that the improved protrusion provides an effective seal to minimize leakage through the grooves that may occur between the abutting panel edges.
