Abstract

PURPOSE:To introduce an edge printing into a trimming process of bookbinding and to increase efficiency, by using an ink jet head which is capable of moving along the binding edge, and by scanning the front of the edge, before the fixed binding position is released, to jet print signs and letters as required at places on the edge surface as desired. CONSTITUTION:A book 1' which is positioned by a book feed 3 provided at a fixed interval on a conveyor before trimming is moved to a trimming section by the nail 3. And at the same time, by upward movement of a bottom plate 6 provided in the trimming section, synchronous with movement of the conveyor 2, the movement of the book 1' is stopped and simultaneously a trimming cover plate 10 comes down to hold the book. Then, a trimming blade 5 comes down to trim the edge, and no sooner than the trimming blade 5 leaves the book 1' edge, and before release of the book holding, an ink jet head 7 is made to scan along the book edge, and jet printing of the required signs and letters at specified places is performed.

The book before trimming is positioned by main feed pawls installed at regular intervals on the conveyor, and the books before trimming are transported and pushed out to the trimmer section by the feed pawls. The movement of the bound book that has been raised and transported is stopped, and the trimmer holding plate descends to hold down the book. After this, the trimmer blade descends to cut the edge of the book, but as soon as the trimmer blade leaves the edge of the book, and before the book is released, the ink jet cuts the edge of the book and scans it. Since the required symbols and characters are jet-printed at predetermined locations, there is no need for processes such as conveying and stopping a newly trimmed booklet for small print, or installing a separate printing machine, making it extremely simple. To enable efficient small-sized printing without taking up space in equipment. Although it is possible to use a conventional voltage application head as an inkjet head, an air pressurization type is preferable for practical use, considering the cost of ink and problems caused by paper dust.
