Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 [産業上の利用分野] 本発明は、インクジェットプリント用ヘッド、<シ<は
インクを小滴として飛翔させて記録紙に付着させ・るイ
ンクジェット方式のヘッドに関するものである。
[従来の技術] インクジェット方式の記録法は、周知のようにインクの
微小な液滴を飛翔させて、これを記録紙等に付着させ画
像の記録を行なうものである。
このインクジェット方式の記録法には、従来、連続的に
発生する液滴を電界等により制御して記録を行なうコン
ティニュアス方式と記録が必要なときにのみオリフィス
よりインクの液滴を吐出させるオンデマンド方式とがあ
る。オンデマンド方式にはピエゾ振動素子の機械的振動
を用いて液滴を発生させる手段と、発熱素子の熱により
液滴を発生させる手段とがあるが、発熱素子を用いる手
段の方が記録速度を」二げるために重要なヘッドのマル
チ化が容易である等の有利な点が多い。
この発熱素子を用いるインクジェット方式の記録手段は
、特開昭54−59936号公報に記録法およびその装
置として開示されている。即ち、インク室中に設けられ
た発熱用抵抗体に記録信号としてパルスを印加すると発
熱によりインクが気化してバブルが発生し、そのバブル
の圧力によってインクをオリフィスより吐出させて記録
紙等に付着させ記録を行なうようにしたものである。と
ころが、このような記録手段においては隣接するヘッド
に形成されたバブルの圧力が他のオリフィスに及んで記
録信号が入力されていない発熱体素子に対応するオリフ
ィスからもインクの吐出が起るという不具合かあり、こ
れを防止するために、実開昭59−174245号公報
および特開昭59−207261号公報に示されるプリ
ントヘッドのように、各オリフィス間に障壁を設けて圧
力室を形成する技術手段が提案されている。
[発明が解決しようとする問題点] 従来の各オリフィス間に障壁を設けて圧力室を形成する
技術手段では、ヘッドの形状が大変複雑化するので、ヘ
ッドを製作する際には圧力室のエツチング基板に対して
の接合等に、非常に高度の微細加工技術を必要とされる
。従って製作コストが高くつくという欠点を伴う。本発
明はこのような点に着目してなされたれものであって、
構造が簡単で製造が容易なインクジェットプリント用ヘ
ッドを提供することを目的とする。
[問題点を解決するための手段および作用]このプリン
ト用ヘッドでは、各オリフィス間に障壁などを設けるこ
となく、複数個の発熱用抵抗体を有する基板と、上記発
熱用抵抗体に対応する位置にオリフィスの穿設されたオ
リフィス板との対向配置距離を、10〜40μmとした
ものである。
[実 施 例] 先づ、本発明の詳細な説明するに先立ち、本発明のイン
クジェットプリント用ヘッドの基本的構成とその作用に
ついて説明しておくと、第1図に示す如く、基板1」−
にオリフィス板3を接合しインク室5を形成するのであ
るが、オリフィス板3の形状により発熱用抵抗体2とこ
れに対応する位置に穿設されたオリフィス4との間のギ
ャップか規制される。そして、抵抗体2にパルス電流を
印加してやると同抵抗体2は発熱し、これによってイン
クが気化し、第2図に示すようにバブル6が形成される
。そしてこのバブル6の圧力によってインク室5内のイ
ンクがインク滴7としてオリフィス4から吐出される。
パルス電流の印加が除去されると抵抗体2の温度は下が
り、第3図に示すようにバブル6は消去する。バブルが
消失した抵抗体2上にインクが再び供給されるためには
基板1とオリフィス板3との間の空隙を通じて外部から
インク室5内にインクを流し込む必要がある。
この場合、実験により基板1とオリフィス板3とのギャ
ップがlOt1m以下であるとインクの流入速度が遅く
連続してインクを飛翔させることが困難となり、また逆
に基板1とオリフィス板3とのギャップやく40μm以
」二になると、バブルの圧力が隣接するオリフィスに及
び第4図に示す如く、パルス電流の印加されていない抵
抗体2に対応するオリフィス4からもインクの吐出が起
り不必要な記録が行なわれることが判明した。従って、
基板1とオリフィス板3のギャップを10〜40μmと
すれば、ヘッドとして充分な機能を有することになる。
′ 本発明は上記の実験結果に基づいて基板1とオリフィス
板3との離間距離を、10〜40μmの間に規制するよ
うにしたものである。
以下、本発明の具体的な実施例を図面によって詳細に説
明する。第5図(A)(B)は本発明の第1実施例を示
すプリント用ヘッドであって、パルス電流を印加するこ
とにより発熱する抵抗体2か基板1上に複数個、等間隔
に設けられている。
この基板1と一定距離の空間を保ちインク室5を形成す
るようにオリフィス板3かその外周縁部を気密および水
密的に基板1上に接合されている。
このオリフィス板3には」二記各抵抗体2に対応して、
直径20〜100μmのオリフィス4か穿設されている
。従って、抵抗体2にパルス電流を印加すると発生する
熱によりインクが気化し、バブルが発生し、このバブル
の圧力によりインク室5内のインクがオリフィス4より
小滴となって飛翔し記録を行なう。この記録によって消
費されたインクは、基板1に穿設されたインク供給口8
を通じてインク室5内に補充される。
また、第6図(A)(B)は本発明の第2実施例を示す
プリント用ヘッドである。この第2実施例において上記
第1実施例と相違する点は発熱用抵抗体2に対応して多
数のオリフィス4が穿設されていることである。その他
の構成は上記第5図(A)(B)に示した第1実施例と
全く同様に構成されている。
次に上記基板1とオリフィス板4の間隔が記録の速度、
印字の室等へ、どのような影響を与えるかを検討するた
めに、その間隔を0〜100μmまで変化させると共に
、印加するパルスの間隔を30〜1m5ecまで変化さ
せたときの記録の安定性および隣接するオリフィスへの
影響を実験した結果を示す。表1は上記第1実施例の結
果であり、表2は上記第2実施例の結果である。
なお、ヘッドに印加した電圧は35v、パルス幅56n
secである。

表1および表2に示すように、30〜1m5ecのパル
ス間隔で連続的にパルスを印加し、記録の安定性を3段
階に評価した。即ち、印加したパルスに応じて連続的に
記録が行なわれるものを01一部に記録の不完全な部分
が発生したものを△、インクが飛翔せず、全く記録が行
なわれないものを×とした。オリフィス板3と基板1の
距離が10μm以上であれば、記録の安定性については
問題はないが、0μmではパルス間隔を縮めるに従って
印字の安定性が悪くなる。これはオリフィス板3と基板
1との間から供給されるインクが間隔が狭くなると流れ
にくくなり記録速度に追いつかなくなるためである。
一方、隣接オリフィスへの緩衝は−っオキのヘッドにパ
ルスを印加し、パルスの印加されていない抵抗体に対応
するオリフィスからのインクの飛翔があるか、ないかを
観察した。そして、隣接したオリフィスからのインクの
飛翔のないものを0、飛翔のあるものを×とした。その
結果、50μm・以」二で隣接するオリフィスへの干渉
が見られ、特にパルス間隔の短い範囲で多く発生した。
これは基板とオリフィス板との間隔を広げるに従ってバ
ブルの圧力が横方向に広がり隣接するヘッドからのイン
クの飛翔が起るものと考えらる。
従って、本発明のヘッドのように障壁を設けずに、圧力
室を形成しないようにするものでは、隣設するオリフィ
スへの圧力の漏れによる不必要なインクの飛翔を防止す
るためには基板とオリフィス板との距離を厳密に10〜
40μmに規制する必要がある。
[発明の効果] 以上述べたように、本発明によれば各オリフィス間の障
壁や隔壁を設ける必要がないので構成が極めて簡単とな
り、高速の連続印字が可能で、隣設する抵抗体の干渉に
よる不必要な記録の発生しない優れた記録特性をもつイ
ンクジェットプリント用ヘッドを提供することができる

Claims (1)

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】 複数個の発熱用抵抗体を有する基板と、この基板上に配
    設され、上記発熱用抵抗体に対応する位置に穿設されて
    いてインク小滴を吐出する複数個のオリフィスを有する
    オリフィス板とを具備し、上記基板とオリフィス板間に
    インクを収容するインクジェットプリント用ヘッドにお
    いて、 上記基板とオリフィス板の距離を、10〜40μmとし
    たことを特徴とするインクジェットプリント用ヘッド。
