Abstract

A method of cooling the hydraulic fluid in a power steering system comprising feeding said fluid to and from a storage tank 1 which has a common wall 3 with an adjacent tank 2 for coolant whereby said common wall acts as a heat exchanging interface for cooling the hydraulic fluid as it flows through the storage tank. The method is particularly applicable to motor vehicles in that the coolant tank can be the water reservoir for supplying water to the windscreen and/or headlamp washing systems of the vehicle. <IMAGE>

According to the device according to the invention, the pressure oil of the steering system is cooled by heat transfer to the stored water of the cleaning system. The water tanks of windshield window cleaning devices and lighting lamp cleaning devices have very large volumes, so that sufficient cooling of the pressure oil can be achieved. According to this device according to the present invention, the oil tank can be made of synthetic resin instead of metal, which is advantageous in terms of cost, although heat transfer is not good.

An advantageous embodiment of the invention is that the oil tank and the water tank are designed as a common double-chamber tank with a partition between them. With this embodiment, only one tank and one support device are required for the steering device and the cleaning device. This results in weight and cost savings and reduced assembly time.

A guide wall is preferably disposed within the oil tank between the oil return pipe from the steering device and the oil feed pipe to the steering pump. This ensures that the pressure oil circulates within the oil tank and is not immediately transferred from the oil return pipe to the oil supply pipe without being cooled.

In another embodiment of the invention, in order to ensure that sufficient cooling of the pressure oil is always guaranteed,
The water pipes to the windscreen cleaning device and/or to the lamp cleaning device are preferably arranged in the side wall of the water tank at a position somewhat higher than the bottom of the water tank. In this way, a predetermined amount of water (depending on the height of the feed pipe) always remains in the water tank.

It is of course also possible to provide the oil tank and the water tank with other shapes and with different connection structures within the scope of the invention. This depends on the conditions of use and the space available. Thus, for example, a cylindrical oil tank can be arranged on the inside, and a rectangular or square outer tank for cleaning water can be arranged surrounding this oil tank. It is also conceivable to have the opposite structure.
