Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the weight and size of a device and to permit sensing of whether a prescribed temp. range is attained or not by discriminating the light transmission characteristic changing with the temp. of a liquid crystal in a liquid crystal temp. sensor having a cholesteric liquid crystal. CONSTITUTION:The temp. sensor is constituted of a light source 1 whicb is a light emitting diode or white lamp having a prescribed wavelength characteristic, a liquid crystal cell 2 contg. a cholesteric liquid crystal, an optical filter 3 having a prescribed wavelength characteristic, a photodetector 4 such as phototransistor and a temp. discriminating circuit 7, etc. The photodetection signal taken out of both ends of load resistor 6 by making use of the phenomenon in which the overall wavelength of the light source 1, the filter 3 and the photodetector 4 does not depend on temp. and in which the light transmittability of the liquid crystal 2 changes with temp. is subjected to data processing in the circuit 7 to know the environmental temp. range to which the liquid crystal 2 is subjected to exist. Constituting parts are thereby decreased and the very small temp. change is sensed with high sensitivity.
