Abstract

PURPOSE:A termite-combating agent that contains at least one of halogenated naphthoquinones, as active ingredients, thus showing high termite-combatting effect and weather resistance with low toxicity to vertebrates and high safety, because little anxiety of its accumulation and concentration in environments. CONSTITUTION:The objective agent contains, as active ingredients, at least one of halogenated naphthoquinone such as 2-chloro-1,4-naphthoquinone, 2,3,-dichloro- 1,4-naphthoquinone, or 5-bromo-1,4-naphthoquinene. It can be used as such, however, in general, in the form of formulations such as solution, emulsion, powder or aerosol which are prepared by adding carriers and auxiliary additives. The resultant agent is supplied to environment of termites, foundations and construction materials such as bridges, buildings to be protected, the soil around them, fire sheets, coating for pavement and electric wires by coating, spraying or dipping. Especially, they are effective in control of termits, YAMATO SHIROARI, IYE SHIROARI, or DAIKOKU SHIROARI.

[Detailed Description of the Invention] Damage to houses and trees caused by termites has been increasing steadily in recent years, and it is said that in Japan alone, the damage amount reaches several tens of billions of yen annually. Therefore, various studies have been made regarding termite control measures, and in fact, a large number of termite control agents have been put into practical use. However, there are many places where it is difficult to apply termiticides, such as where sea ants live, such as in the soil under floors or in the wood of foundations, so the termite control effect should be as complete and long-lasting as possible with a single application. For this reason, large amounts of termiticides may be used. In such cases, on the one hand, safety issues for vertebrates arise. In other words, if a termite control agent is to be applied to the foundations or soil of houses and livestock sheds, it is a matter of course that it must be highly safe to vertebrates.

Furthermore, since termite damage occurs under floors where humidity is high, as well as in kitchens, bathrooms, and washrooms, there is a need for products that can be used in such locations for a long time, that is, products that are highly weather resistant.

In many cases, termites that come into contact with the termite control agent trap of the present invention exhibit unusual phenomena such as abnormalities in their antennae, such as browning or cutting, damage to their legs, and decreased sensitivity to smells and heat. Even if the disease does not lead to death, the patient loses the ability to function and eventually dies.

Therefore, it seems that the termite control agent of the present invention exhibits termite control performance through a mechanism of action that is different from that of conventional termite control agents. Thus, while the termite control agent of the present invention exhibits unique physiological activity, it has low toxicity to vertebrates, and there is also little risk of accumulation and concentration in the natural environment. In other words, conventional termite control agents contain harmful metals, such as CCH agents (a mixture of chromium compounds, copper compounds, and arsenic compounds), and those that contain environmental pollution, such as adorin, dieldrin, heptacroμ, and chlordane. Considering that termite control agents of the present invention were mainly used for termite control, the industrial significance of the termite control agent of the present invention is great.

In the test specimens treated with this insecticide, no termite damage was observed even after one year, and no signs of decay were observed. On the other hand, the untreated test specimens suffered damage in just six months, and had to be replaced with new test specimens after six months. The results of this efficacy test show that this control agent has excellent termite control performance and weather resistance, and is useful as a preventive agent for coating, spraying, and dipping.
