Abstract

PURPOSE:To realize production of an exhauster at a low cost without increasing its weight by inserting plural exhaust pipes deeply into a box-shaped expansion chamber made of sheet metal and fixing the outer wall of the insertions to the inner wall of the expansion chamber by welding process. CONSTITUTION:Four exhaust pipes 1 are connected at their curved top ends to each cylinder of an engine, with their rear ends connected in a cluster to a box- shaped expansion chamber 2 made of sheet metal by way of diffuser tubes 5 which form the parts of the exhaust pipes. The circumferences of the diffuser tubes 5 are fixed by welding on the inlet ports of the expansion chamber 2 with the rear ends being inserted deeply inside and the outer walls of the insertions are welded to the inner wall of the expansion chamber 2 at plug welding positions 7.

As an exhaust system installed in a vehicle such as a motorcycle equipped with a multi-cylinder engine, multiple exhaust pipes are once converged into a box-shaped expansion chamber made of a sheet metal layer, and the air is discharged from the exhaust side of this expansion chamber through another exhaust pipe. Some are designed to exhaust air inside. Since the expansion chamber is made of a sheet metal layer, if configured as is, the wall surface would vibrate due to exhaust pulsation, producing loud shell noise. Conventionally, measures have been taken to eliminate this shell noise, such as fixing glass wool to the inside of the expansion chamber with punched metal, or fixing struts extending above and below, but the former method of fixing glass wool increases the weight. The latter has the disadvantage that the struts provide flow resistance to the exhaust gas, resulting in a reduction in engine output.

The present invention achieves the above object by converging a plurality of exhaust pipes connected to an internal combustion engine into a box-shaped expansion chamber made of a sheet metal layer, and passing from the ur-air side of the expansion chamber to the atmosphere side via another exhaust pipe. In the exhaust system for exhausting air into the expansion chamber, the plurality of exhaust pipes are deeply inserted into the expansion chamber (7) The outer wall of the insertion portion of the exhaust pipe and the inner wall of the expansion chamber are fixed by welding. That is.

Figure 2.3 shows details of the two parts of the expansion chamber. The expansion chamber 2 is formed by combining an upper plate 2a and a lower plate 2b made of sheet metal into halves, and the joints thereof are welded to form a box shape. A reinforcing rib 8 is provided on the surface of the expansion chamber 2. The differential user pipe 5, which constitutes a part of the exhaust pipe, has its periphery fixed by welding at the inlet end of the expansion chamber 2, and its rear end side is inserted deep inside, so that the outer wall of the insertion part and the expansion chamber 2 It has a fixed structure that is plug welded to the inner wall and has a welded portion 7 as shown in FIG. The circumference of the exhaust pipe 3 on the exhaust side is fixed by welding at the outlet end of the expansion chamber 2, but if necessary, the front end side can be inserted deeply into the expansion chamber 2 in the same way as the differential user pipe 5 described in 1 above, and the inserted part can be expanded. Plug welding may be performed between the inner wall of the chamber 2 and the inner wall of the chamber 2.

To assemble the two lower plates 2a and 2b of the expansion chamber 2, the differential user g5, and the exhaust pipe 3, first, the entire assembly is assembled, and welding is performed along the joint between the upper plate 2a and the lower plate 2b. Upper plate 2a or lower plate 2b for differential user pipe 5 and exhaust pipe 3
It is sufficient to first weld one half of the circumference along the line, and then weld the last remaining half of the circumference.

According to the above-mentioned exhaust system, the rear ends of the plurality of differential user pipes 5 constituting a part of the exhaust pipe are deeply inserted into the expansion chamber 2, and the inserted portions are welded to the inner wall of the expansion chamber 2. Since it is fixed, the insertion portion of the differential user tube 5 acts as a strength member of the expansion chamber 2 and improves the rigidity of the expansion chamber 2 made of a thin sheet metal. Therefore, the expansion chamber 2 does not vibrate due to exhaust pulsation and generate large shell noise. In addition, unlike the conventional structure in which glass wool is pasted thickly on the inside of the expansion chamber, it does not increase weight and is low cost.Furthermore, the upper and lower hangings increase the flow resistance of the exhaust air like struts. Not at all.

In the above embodiment, the inner wall surface of the expansion chamber 2 and the outer wall surface of the insertion portion of the differential user tube 5 are welded together by plug welding, but this welding may be performed by other welding methods. Also,
In the embodiment, there are two welding locations on the top and bottom, but there is no problem in increasing the number of welding locations.

As described above, the present invention converges a plurality of exhaust pipes connected to an internal combustion engine into a box-shaped expansion chamber made of sheet metal, and exhausts from the exhaust side of the expansion chamber to the atmosphere side via another exhaust pipe. In the desired exhaust system, the plurality of exhaust pipes are inserted deeply into the expansion chamber, and the outer wall of the insertion portion of the exhaust pipes and the inner wall of the expansion chamber are welded and fixed, so that the exhaust pipes can be inserted easily. Since the part acts as a strength member of the expansion chamber and improves the rigidity of the sheet metal expansion chamber, the expansion chamber will not vibrate due to exhaust pulsation and generate large shell noise. Moreover, unlike the conventional structure in which glass wool is pasted, there is no increase in weight, and it can be manufactured at low cost. Also,
Unlike the case where struts are provided, there is no flow resistance to the exhaust gas, so there is no reduction in engine output.
