Abstract

PURPOSE:To automatically detect a trouble in an ink ribbon and prevent defective printing or damage on a printing head from being generated, by providing a sensor for detecting holes provided in an ink ribbon at regular intervals, a counter for counting the holes, a timer and a discriminating circuit. CONSTITUTION:A photo-sensor 7 detects the holes 8 provided in the ink ribbon 5 at regular intervals, and outputs a signal, which is converted into a digital signal by an amplifier 9, and the digital signal is inputted into the counter 10 and the discriminating circuit 11. When a ribbon-feeding signal 16 is inputted, the circuit 11 starts the timer for setting, and starts the timer for resetting each time the signal of the ribbon hole 8 is received. Where the timer set point is set to be a period of time longer than the interval of the signals of the ribbon holes 8, a timer circuit 12 does not reach a time-up condition, as far as the ink ribbon 5 is normally fed. But, when a trouble is generated in the feeding of the ink ribbon and the inputting of the signal of the ribbon hole 8 is stopped, the timer circuit 12 reaches a time-up condition, and the circuit 11 outputs a ribbon abnormality signal 15.

Conventional configurations and their problems Conventionally, few printing devices of this type were equipped with a mechanism to detect the presence or absence of an ink ribbon, and the function was simply to detect whether an ink ribbon was set. Confirmation of the suitability of the ribbon is left entirely to the operator's visual inspection, and even if the ink ribbon is set in a bent position by mistake, or if there is a problem with the ink ribbon during printing, this cannot be detected, resulting in poor printing or There was a problem in that the print head mechanism was easily damaged. Incidentally, since the dot wires of recent dot printers are becoming thinner, the dot wires are more likely to be damaged if the ink ribbon gets caught in the ink ribbon or if the ink ribbon is hit dry. Further, there were other problems such as the timing of replacing the ink ribbon was left to the operator's visual inspection.

When the ink ribbon is being fed normally, the sensor output is obtained before the timer circuit times up.
Each time, the timer is reset and restarted, waiting for sensor output, and when the timer circuit times up, it is known that a problem has occurred with the ink ribbon.

Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the schematic configuration of a needle printer.
1 is a platen, and 2 is a carriage on which a print head 3 is attached, which is reciprocated by a drive belt 6 in parallel to the axial direction of the platen. The print head 3 performs printing operations in response to commands from the head drive circuit. The carriage 2 has a pair of ink ribbon spools 4 located on both sides of the print head 3.
a, 4b are arranged, and the ink ribbon 6, which is stretched between both spools 41, 4b, is interposed between the print head 3 and the platen 1. Reference numeral 7 denotes an optical sensor (photocoupler) for detecting the feeding of the ink ribbon 5, and an enlarged view is shown in FIG. In FIG. 2, reference numeral 8 indicates holes formed at regular intervals in the ink ribbon 5, and the optical sensor 7 outputs a signal by detecting the holes 8. FIG. 3 shows a block diagram of the ink ribbon abnormality detection section. In FIG. 3, the signal of the ribbon hole 8 detected by the optical sensor 7 is converted into a digital signal by the amplifier 9 and inputted to the counter 10 and the determination circuit 11. The determination circuit 11 sets and starts a timer when the ribbon feed signal 16 is input, and resets and starts the timer for each signal from the ribbon hole 8. If the timer setting value is set to a time longer than the signal interval of the ribbon hole 8, as long as the ink ribbon 5 is being fed normally, the timer circuit 12 will not time up, but a problem may occur in the ink ribbon feeding. When the signal from the ribbon hole 8 no longer enters, a time-up occurs, and the determination circuit 11 outputs the ribbon abnormality signal 15. Also, the counter 1Q, which retains data even after the power is turned off, counts up the signal from the ink ribbon hole 8 to detect the ribbon. 5 is converted and an ink ribbon replacement timing signal 14 is output. The counter circuit 10 is returned to its initial value by a reset signal 13 when the ink ribbon is replaced.
