Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable gradation recording, by laminating a plurality of ink layers having the same color onto a base film in the order lowered in a m.p. toward and upper layer. CONSTITUTION:Plural ink layers 3, 4, 5 having the same optical density per a unit volume and the same thickness are laminated to a base film 2. A single color layer is heated through the base film 2 and the heating temp. thereof is controlled to either one of low, medium and high temps. At a low temp., only the upper ink layer 5 is melted and, at a medium temp., the upper and middle layers 4, 5 are melted and, at a high temp., all of the ink layers 3, 4, 5 are melted. Therefore, when the heating temp. is low, medium and high, the ink amounts adhered to recording paper respectively become little, medium and much while low, medium and high optical densities are shown on the recording paper. By increasing a number of laminate layers, lowering a m.p. toward the upper layer an finely controlling a heating temp. at the time of transfer, multi-gradation recording is obtained.

(b) Conventional technology The so-called melt-type thermal transfer recording method involves heating an ink sheet with ink adhered to a base film according to a recording pattern to melt the ink and transfer it onto recording paper. Image recording is performed using a binary representation of whether or not the image is displayed. For this reason, it is difficult to obtain a density of 1-gradation using this type of method, and even in the case of color image recording, it is difficult to obtain a density of 1 to 7 gradations at most. Only colors can be recorded.

When heating the single color ink layer Y, C1 or M through the base film (2) for thermal transfer, if the temperature is controlled to low, medium or high, if the temperature is low, the ink of the upper layer will be heated. Only the layer (5) melts, and in the case of medium humidity, the upper and middle ink layers (4) (5) melt, and in the case of higher temperature, all the ink layers (3) (4) (5) melt. melts. Therefore, when the heating temperature is low, medium, or high, the amount of ink deposited on the recording paper will be small, medium, or large, respectively, and in the end,
Recording paper 3- exhibits low, medium, and high optical densities on the paper.

According to the above thermal transfer ink sheet, three types of gradation can be obtained for each single color in this way, but by increasing the number of laminated ink layers constituting each single color ink layer Y, M, C, Multi-gradation recording can be achieved by maintaining the relationship that the melting point decreases as the layer approaches the upper layer and by controlling the heating temperature during transfer more precisely.

When heating the single color ink layer Y, C or M through the base film (2) for Ml copying, the temperature is set to low, medium,
If the temperature is low, only the upper ink layer (5) will melt, which will give a low optical density on the recording paper, and if the humidity is medium, the upper and middle ink layers (5) will melt.
4) (5) melts, which exhibits an intermediate optical density on the recording paper; similarly, at high temperatures, all ink layers (3), (4), and (5) melt; , it exhibits high optical density. In this case as well, three levels of gradation can be obtained for each single color.

When performing thermal transfer using the ink sheet shown in Fig. 3, by similarly controlling the heating temperature to low, medium, or high, if only the upper ink layer (5a) is melted, the upper and middle ink layers (5a) can be melted. When 5a) (4a) melts, all the ink layers (3a), (4a), and (5a) may melt. Each ink layer has the same 5-optical density per unit volume, but the thickness of each ink layer is different, so depending on the recording temperature, a small amount, a medium amount, or a large amount of ink adheres to the recording paper. , the apparent optical density is high, low, medium, and high, respectively, and in this case also three types of gradation recording can be made.

In the case of the ink sheet shown in FIG. 3 as well, multi-gradation recording can be performed by increasing the number of laminated ink layers and decreasing the thickness of each layer toward the top. In addition to changing the thickness of each ink layer (la), (4a), and (5a), the optical a degree per unit volume may be made smaller as the layer approaches the upper layer.

The recording head (10) includes a plurality of heating dots arranged in a line in a direction perpendicular to the feeding direction of the recording paper (12), that is, in the width direction of the recording paper (12). Ink sheet (1)
is completely pulled out from the supply roll (13), and the winding shaft (14)
It is wound up. By the rotation of the platen (11), the recording paper (12) and the ink sheet (1) are fed together.
By generating heat in the recording head (10) in a pattern corresponding to the image to be recorded in synchronization with this feeding, the ink layer of the ink sheet (1) is melted and completely transferred onto the recording paper (12).

At this time, by adjusting the amount of electricity applied to each heat generating dot of the recording head (10) and controlling the amount of heat generated by each, monochrome recording with the necessary gradation can be achieved. Moreover, by repeating such transfer three times and transferring and forming Y, M, and C monochrome pixels in a superimposed manner, it is possible to record a multicolor image.
