In FIG. 1 showing this conventional shock-absorbing steering shaft and FIG. 2 showing a fragmentary enlarged portion of the shaft, l is a lower tube, 2 is an upper tube, and 3 is a steel pole, which is a lower tube L and an upper tube. A steel pole is inserted into the fitting part of the tube 2, 4 is a lower shaft, 5 is an upper shaft, and 6 is a steering wheel.

It rolls while creating grooves, and this resistance absorbs energy. The lower shaft 4 and upper shaft 5 are fitted in the same way as tubes, but in order to mainly transmit torque, they are formed with a cross-sectional shape approximating an ellipse in the direction of rotation, and when subjected to axial force, this fitting part was designed to slide in the axial direction without resistance.1 However, the conventional shock-absorbing steering shaft as described above requires very high precision in terms of the diameter of the pole and the precision of the inner and outer tubes between which the steel pole is inserted. It had the disadvantage that it had to be manufactured using high-quality materials, which resulted in very high costs. Furthermore, because conventional shock-absorbing steering shafts were made entirely of steel, the weight of the entire shaft was heavy, and even the lightest shafts weighed more than 3 out of 9, excluding the wheels. For this reason, it has been desired that conventional shock-absorbing steering shafts be further improved in order to reduce the weight of automobiles.

The steering shaft 10 is made of a composite material made of fiber-reinforced plastic such as carbon fiber and resin, and a steering wheel 11 and a steering column 12 are attached to one end thereof, and a universal joint (13) is attached to the other end.
via a suitable steering mechanism (not shown). Three abacus-shaped convex portions 14 are arranged in the axial direction and integrally formed in the middle of the steering shaft 10 in the longitudinal direction.

4 absorbs the load while deforming into a flat shape due to compressive force, and when the load exceeds a certain level, the resin layer 21b acting as a binder between the carbon fibers 21a breaks down by shearing, and the energy is absorbed. United States Safety Standards (MVSS 20
3), the steering shaft shock absorption test stipulates the reaction force received by the human body 1 when a dummy equivalent to a human body collides with the steering wheel 11 at a constant speed. However, the shock absorbing steering shaft according to the present invention can be designed and manufactured to satisfy the above requirements by appropriately adjusting the composition, orientation, etc. of the composite material itself.

Since the absorption of total energy is the reaction force generated in a collision multiplied by the duration, there is a method of lowering the reaction force and increasing the duration, in other words, increasing the amount of deformation, but this is limited. The design takes up a lot of space and is not economical.

Very stable energy absorption performance can be obtained, and it is lightweight and can be manufactured at low cost.
