Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable provision of a display panel having an excellent characteristic by providing non-light transmittable members on one of two substrates along either line or row electrodes and having plural spacers along the non-light transmittable members between the substrates. CONSTITUTION:Spacer members 6-1, 6'-1 on line electrodes and spacer members 6-2, 6'-2... on row electrodes are provided on line electrodes 1a, 1a'... and row electrodes 3, 3'.... If the spacer members are formed on the electrodes 3, 3', 3''... in such a way, the short circuiting by contact with the opposed electrodes 8 is prevented even if the space between the same is very small. A display panel of 100cm<2> display area having a uniform gap of 4mum is obtd, by providing a one spacer member per 1cm<2> by using glass substrate of 0.5mm.. As a result, the liquid crystal panel that can maintain easily the uniform gap over the entire part of the display is completed.

In such a display panel, the operating characteristics of the cell are highly dependent on the thickness of the liquid crystal layer, and the display characteristics of the entire display channel are likely to deteriorate. Therefore, in order to obtain good WiaIl properties or high-speed response, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer must be as thin as possible (e.g., several μm to 10 μm) and uniform over a certain area (for example, in the range of 10 crIL2 or more). There is a need to.

From the above point, in order to keep the thickness of the liquid crystal layer constant, there is a known method of mixing an inert material with a certain particle size into the liquid crystal layer, but it is not possible to maintain the thickness of the liquid crystal layer uniformly over a wide display surface. It is difficult to mix in an inert material, and it may disturb the alignment of liquid crystal molecules in the image display area, so this cannot be a practical method.

An equivalent circuit of the semiconductor drive circuit used in the display panel of the present invention is shown in FIG. 6, and its driving method is, for example, sequentially applying a scanning signal to the row electrodes 1 a , 1 a', . . . . The TPT to which the scanning signal is applied becomes conductive. At this time, the column electrode 6°5T perpendicular to this, ¥...
When an image signal is applied to the drain electrode 4, this voltage is applied to the drain electrode 4,
4', 4', etc. This scanning signal is sequentially transferred to the adjacent row electrodes, and when the TPT of each row is turned on, voltage is supplied to the drain electrode group of that row, and when the row electrodes are rotated once, an image is generated for all picture elements. A signal is provided. In order to increase the effective voltage of the drain electrode group, it is preferable to apply the voltage to the column electrodes by line sequential scanning rather than dot sequential scanning in which signals are sequentially sent to each picture element. That is, this is a method in which a signal is simultaneously applied to all the drain electrodes of the row in the on-state row.

Only while signals are being input to the row electrodes in this way, conduction occurs between the column electrodes and the drain electrodes selected from among the intersections of these electrode matrices, and a voltage is generated between the drain electrodes and the counter electrode 8. is applied. This applied voltage changes the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules to produce a display.

1. The spacer member used in the present invention can maintain the gap between the nine substrates over a larger area compared to the conventional method in which a seal member is provided only at the periphery of the substrate.

2. Since the spacer member used in the present invention is provided in the non-light-transmitting portion of the display surface, it is possible to prevent the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules from being disturbed on the image display surface.

5. In the present invention, since the spacer members are provided scattered within the display surface, the spacer members can be provided even if one or both of the display substrate on which the semiconductor drive element is provided and the counter electrode substrate are flexible films. , it is possible to achieve the effects described in the first and second terms above.

In the conventional method, in response to item 1 above, 1. The seal part (Fig. 2, 10) provided only at the periphery functions as a spacer member to maintain a constant gap between the substrates, and at the same time, it is used to fill the liquid crystal. Since it is necessary to have the function of a sealing member, there are easy restrictions on the selection of materials for the sealing member.

2. When the substrate is made thinner, the substrate is easily deformed, and it is almost impossible to maintain a minute gap between the substrates of, for example, 4 to 10 μm.

6. Since the sealing member is easily deformed, the gap between the substrates becomes partially uneven within the substrate surface of one cell, which tends to cause uneven display characteristics. However, according to the present invention, all of the above-mentioned drawbacks can be solved at the same time.

In the conventional method, regarding item 2 above, due to the spacer member provided on the display surface, some disturbance occurs in the arrangement of liquid crystal molecules in the area where the spacer is provided, and the image on the display surface becomes somewhat unsightly. was there.

The drawbacks of the conventional methods can also be overcome in the case of item 6 above, that is, when one or both of the display substrate on which the semiconductor drive element is provided and the counter substrate are readable films. Furthermore, the present invention has the advantage that a display with excellent gradation and responsiveness can be obtained. Moreover, in the display panel of the present invention, especially in the case of color display in which a color filter is formed on the drain electrode, a sharp view can be obtained because each pixel is separated by a non-light-transmitting portion.
