Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the discoloration of a coloring part and the coloring of a texture part due to contact with a bare hand, by using a specific phenol compound as a developer for a leuco dye. CONSTITUTION:As the developer for a normally colorless or light-colored leuco dye such as a triphenylmethane lactone or fluoran, a phenol compound of formula I (wherein X is a lower alkyl group and/or a halogen atom and n is 0-3) is used. An example of the phenol compounds is 4-hydroxy-4'-chlorodiphenyl sulfone with a melting point of about 130-160 deg.C. In general, a dye solution, a developer solution, and a filler solution are prepared, mixed, and applied on a support, and dried. Then calendering is performed to smooth the surface.

Heat-sensitive recording sheets that utilize a heated color-forming reaction between normally colorless or light-colored colorless dyes (leuco dyes), phenols, and organic acids are disclosed in Japanese Patent Publication No. 4160 of 1972 and Japanese Patent Publication No. 4160 of 1972,
No. 14039, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 48-27736, etc., and it has been widely put into practical use. Generally, thermal recording sheets are
A coating obtained by pulverizing and dispersing a leuco dye and a color developer such as a phetholic substance into fine particles, mixing the two, and adding a binder, filler, sensitivity improver, lubricant, and other auxiliary agents. A liquid is applied to a support such as paper or film, and color recording is obtained through an instantaneous chemical reaction caused by heating. A thermal printer, facsimile, or the like having a built-in thermal head is used to heat the coloring reservoir of such a heat-sensitive recording sheet. Compared to other recording materials, such recording sheets can produce records in a relatively short time without complex processes such as development and fixing, and do not generate noise. Due to its advantages such as being relatively inexpensive, it can be used not only for copying books and documents, but also for copying books, documents, etc.
It is widely used as a distribution material for various information and measuring instruments such as electronic computers, facsimiles, telex machines, and medical measuring machines.

However, such a conventional heat-sensitive recording sheet made of a combination of a leuco dye and a phenolic substance has the drawback that the density decreases or the color fades when the colored portion is touched with bare hands.

Conversely, if the background area (ground color area) is touched with bare hands, that area may develop color. In any case, it becomes impossible to distinguish between colored areas and background areas, which is a very serious drawback in terms of stable storage of images. This phenomenon is
When oils and fats such as those from fingertips adhere to the colored part of the heat-sensitive recording sheet, the 9leuco dye and phenolic substance, which are colored due to chemical bonds, dissolve in this oil and the bond is broken and the original colorless leuco dye is dissolved. This is thought to be due to the return to the dye and phenolic substance. Conversely, the phenomenon in which the skin develops color is due to the high acidity of this phenolic substance and its high reactivity with leuco dyes. This is sometimes thought to be the result of a color reaction occurring in the solution state.

However, the solubility of leuco dyes, which are generally used in heat-sensitive recording sheets, in oils and fats is very low at room temperature. If a phenolic substance with a low viscosity is used, even when applied with bare hands, the colored areas will not fade or the background areas will not develop color, and so-called "good fingerprint resistance" can be expected.

On the other hand, as an improved version of the conventional heat-sensitive recording sheet, one in which a water-soluble polymer overcoat layer is provided on the heat-sensitive coloring layer has been proposed. This method has disadvantages in that the sensitivity is poor and, furthermore, an overcoat layer coating process is required, resulting in high costs. Therefore, in order to eliminate the need for an overcoat layer and to improve the drawbacks such as decoloring of the colored part and coloring of the background part due to contact with bare hands, the solubility in oils and fats is extremely low, and the ability of leuco dye to develop color is required. It is necessary to use a phenolic substance with sufficient phenolic content.
