Abstract

PURPOSE:To connect optical fibers easily with decreased transmission losses by forming a titled connector in such a way that the central axes of the optical fibers to be connected are aligned with good accuracy. CONSTITUTION:Outside plug pipes 4 which are centerd in such a way as to align the center of the outside diameter 7 of the pipes 4 and the center of the cores of fiber strands 2 are inserted into a jack 12 having an inside diameter roughly equal to the outside diameter of the pipes 4 from both ends thereof, whereby optical fiber transmission lines are connected. Then, the central axes of the optical fiber transmission lines are aligned with good accuracy and with decreased transmission losses. Since a hole 14 is provided on the side wall of the jack 12 to permit venting of air in the stage of inserting the pipes 4, the pipes 4 are inserted easily into the jack 12.

In recent years, the loss of optical fibers has been rapidly reduced, and it is becoming possible to put optical communications into practical use. At this point, the development of connection technology between optical fibers has become inevitable. In particular, in order to effectively reflect the low loss characteristics of optical fibers in system design, a connection technology that can achieve low connection loss is required.

Generally, a contact loss of about 0.2 to 0.5 dB is required, but as is well known, when connecting optical fibers, it is important to align the light concentration areas called cores as much as possible and align the fiber axes. is absolutely necessary. Since the diameter of the core is from several μm to 50 to 60 μm, microscopic precision is required to satisfy the above conditions. For this reason, there is a demand for an optical connector that has low transmission loss and can be easily connected.

The sheath is removed from the distal end of the optical fiber transmission line 1, and it becomes a bare fiber 2. The optical fiber transmission line 1 having the above shape is inserted into the optical fiber fixing tube 3 and fixed so that the end surface 8 of the optical fiber fixing tube 3 and the end surface 9 of the fiber strand 2 are completely aligned. The plug outer tube 4 has a shape as shown in FIG. That is, the jack 12 described later
The screw part 5 and the optical fiber fixing tube 3 are provided with a gap 6 that is large enough to be freely movable in a plane perpendicular to the tube axis in order to make the connection with the optical fiber fixing tube easy and robust.

The fiber wire 2 is connected to the center of the outer diameter 7 of the plug outer tube 4.
Perform centering operations using centering jigs and tools so that the centers of the cores of the two are perfectly aligned. In order to perform this centering operation smoothly and stably, the above-mentioned gap 6 is provided, and this gap 6 is determined by how far the center of the core of the fiber strand 2 is relative to the center of the outer diameter 7 of the plug outer tube 4. You can choose appropriately depending on how eccentric it is. After the centering operation is completed, the optical fiber fixing tube 3 and the plug outer tube 4 are fixed with adhesive lO as shown in the figure. At this time, the end surface 8 of the optical fiber fixing tube 3 is slightly deeper inside than the end surface 11 of the plug outer tube 4. The plug outer tube 4 having the above structure is inserted from both ends of the jack 12 as shown in FIG. 2, and the end surfaces 11 and 11' are brought into contact with each other near the center of the jack 12.

In order to achieve this perfect matching, the inner diameter 13 of the jack 12 substantially matches the outer diameter 7 of the plug outer tube 4. Further, a minute hole 14 is provided approximately in the center of the jack 12 for the purpose of removing the air inside when inserting the plug outer tube 4.4'. The plug outer tubes 4.4'' which are in contact with each other are fitted with the screw portion 5 by rotating a rotary cap 15 with a screw provided on the jack as shown in the figure, and are fixed stably and robustly. Through the above process, the two optical fiber transmission lines are connected.
In FIG. 2, one plug outer tube and a part of the jack are omitted from illustration.

As described above, in this embodiment, the plug outer tube 4 is centered so that the center of the outer diameter 7 of the plug outer tube 4 coincides with the center of the core of the fiber strand 2. Since the optical fiber transmission line is connected by inserting it from both ends of the jack 12, which has an inner diameter that is approximately equal to the jack diameter, the central axes of the optical fiber transmission lines to be connected can be aligned with high accuracy. , Therefore, transmission loss can be reduced. In addition, a hole 14 is provided in the side wall of the jack 12 so that air can escape through the hole 14 when the plug outer tube 4 is inserted.
can be easily inserted into the jack 12.

As shown in the figure, the elastic tube 16 can be placed over the optical fiber fixing tube 3 in one of the plug outer tubes 4 (not shown), and the optical fiber in the other plug outer tube 4 (not shown) that fits together. By inserting the fiber fixing tube 3'' into the other end of the elastic tube 16 and blocking the surrounding atmosphere, it is also possible to prevent the end face of the fiber strand 2 from deteriorating over time. has shown the coupling between fibers, but coupling between them can also be realized by using one fiber end face as the exit surface of a light source, a photodetector, or an optical circuit component.
