Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a prepreg excellent in mechanical properties by a method wherein a tow of carbonaceous fibers is subjected to fiber-opening and fiber- aligning treatments in the presence of a specified amount of water and the fibers are impregnated with a resin so that the tow is flattened to a thin layer and the uniaxial aligning property of the fibers is enhanced.
CONSTITUTION: For example, the tow 1 of carbonaceous fibers (which contain carbon fibers and graphite fibers) is directed into a water bath, and in the condition where water is added to the tow in an amount of not less than 10wt%, the fibers are opened by a fiber-opening bar 3 and are aligned in one direction. Then, the sheet of the opened and aligned carbonaceous fibers is dried by air sprayer and is impregnated with a resin by passing it through a resin impregnation bath 6. Further, the sheet of the fibers in the condition of a mold releasing sheet 7 adhered on one side thereof is dried in a drying furnace 8 while being pressed by nip rollers 9, 10, thereby impregnating the sheet with a resin and expanding the fibrous sheet to obtain the objective prepreg 11.
