Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a steel having excellent strength and toughness at low cost by hardening and tempering a steel material containing specific proportions of C, Si, Mn, Cr, Mo, and Al under a specific condition.
CONSTITUTION: A steel material containing 0.08W0.50wt% C, 0.1W1.5wt% Si, 0.3W2.0wt% Mn, 0.2W2.0wt% Cr, 0.05W1.00wt% Mo, 0.01W0.10wt% Al, and Fe and inevitable impurities is prepared. The steel material is cooled, when being cooled from austenite state, over a cooling period K(sec) from 800W500°C in such a way as to meet the condition A1≥logK≥A2, and then tempered at a temperature below the point Ac1. In this case, A1=3.4C(%)+0.2Si(%)+0.5Mn (%)+0.8Cr(%)+0.5Mo(%)-1.9, and also A2=2.5C(%)+0.8Mn(%)+0.7Cr(%)+ 0.8Mo(%)-0.35.
