Abstract

PURPOSE:To automatically compensate track shift, by converting and storing the quality level of information-read to a specified pattern corresponding to the position of a read/write head and making discrimination from this pattern based on the specified criteria. CONSTITUTION:The information recording section of a floppy disc 1 is provided with 76 lines of concentric tracks T0-T76, a read/write head is slightly moved toward crossing direction of an arbitrary track, and the quality level of the information-read read in with a read/write head in the movement of minute shift is converted into a specified pattern corresponding to the position of the head and stored in the storage section, and after the end of read at a specified range, the optimum read/write head position is discriminated based on the said pattern and the specified criteria. Based on the result of discrimination, the read/write head is finally positioned to the optimum head position. Thus, the track shift is compensated automatically.
