Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide an excellent settling agent for red mud capable of accelerating the settling of red mud in a cleaning thickener, by mixing acrylamide and sodium acrylate at a specified ratio. CONSTITUTION:This settling agent for red mud is a water-soluble polymer containing 5-50mol% acrylamide and 95-50mol% sodium acrylate, and can be obtained by copolymerizing acrylamide with sodium acrylate in an aqueous solution in the presence of a polymerization initiator. As the initiator, ammonium persulfate and sodium disulfite, or 4,4'-azobiscyanovaleric acid, azobisisobutyronitrile and the like can be used, and the polymerization is conducted under the conditions of pH 8-11, an atmosphere of nitrogen gas, and 30-60 deg.C. This settling agent is added to red mud in an amount of about 1-20mg/l directly into a feed well or a transfer piper for the thickener.
