Th difference ΔNn between the data on the rotational frequency of the input shaft at the time of sequential sampling and that on the rotational frequency of the input shaft at the preceding time of the sampling. It is judged whether or not the positiveness or negativeness of the difference ΔNn remains unchanged for a prescribed time. When the positiveness or negativeness remains unchanged for the time, the sum Nr of the differences ΔNn within the prescribed time is determined. The sum Nr is compared with a set value Nt. When the sum Nt is equal to or more than the set value Nt, the speed stage of the automatic transmission is regarded as shifted.
