Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve extreme low temperature toughness and provide excellent properties equal to or more than 9% Ni steel by performing specified heat-treatment to low temperature steel containing 3-4% Ni. CONSTITUTION:After low temperature steel containing 3-4% Ni is heated at the temperature over the transformation point Ac3, 750 deg.C and austenitized, it is water- cooled. Then, heating and cooling cycle is repeated once or more, in which it is heated in the temperature range from the true transforation point Ac1 to the apparent transformation point Ac1+60 deg.C, i.e. 610-700 deg.C, thereafter it is cooled at the cooling speed faster than cooling in air. Finally, it is cooled below the apparent transformation temperature Ac1-20 deg.C. Low temperature toughness is considerably improved by this heat-treatment and low temperature steel having low temperature toughness equal to or better than 9% Ni steel can be obtained.
