Abstract

PURPOSE:To ensure the effective use of a small number of tone wedges of quantization, by changing how to set the tone wedge according to the gradation of characters. CONSTITUTION:The width of a tone wedge is varied for quantization in accordance with the gradation of a picture when the picture output to be optically read is converted into an electric signal and then into a digital signal. For instance, converters 10a-10n are set in parallel to each other in an A/D converter and the input analog signal is supplied to each converter. At the same time, the white level input receives a division of voltasge through resistances 11a-11n and converted into a reference signal. This reference signal is applied to the other input terminal of each converter. Then a resistance 13 is varied by a transistor 12 to change the width of the tone wedge. The output of each converter is coded by an encoder 14 and turned into a quantized video output of 4 bits and 16 tone wedges.
