Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high yield and selectivity, economically, by the dehydration of a primary or secondary alkyl alcohol in liquid phase using a specific zeolite catalyst which is stable even at high temperature and completely noncorrosive to the apparatus.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of an ether having primary or secondary alkyl group by the liquid-phase dehydration reaction of a primary of secondary alkyl alcohol, the reaction is carried out in the presence of a specific zeolite catalyst which is a porous aluminosilicate of formula (M is alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cation, etc.; n is valence number; x and y are variable) wherein said zeolite is ion-exchanged with proton or a trivalent metal cation when the zeolite is a metal cation-aluminosilicate, or is activated by calcination when it is an organic base cation-aluminosilicate.
EFFECT: The catalyst can be easily separated from the reaction products.
