NEW MATERIAL:3-Acyloxy-4(H)-pyran-4-one of formulaI(R is CH3, C15H31 or C17H35). EXAMPLE:3-Acetoyloxy-4(H)-pyran-4-one. USE:A kin beautifying agent or a bleaching agent for external use. It has high chemical stability. The chelation of the compound with metals such as iron effects no color development, but increases the solubility in fat and improves the absorptivity through the skin. PROCESS:The compound of formulaIis prepared by reacting the compound of formula II with the corresponding acyl halide using a conventional process. When the compound of formulaIis absorbed in the skin, it is immediately hydrolyzed to the compound of formula II, which exhibits tyrosinase activity inhibiting action, suppresses the formation of melamine, and gives skin beautifying effecr even to human body. The amount of the compound in the skin beautifying cosmetic or the bleaching agent for external use is 0.002-5wt%, pref. 0.01-1wt%.
