PURPOSE:To extract a concerned range with no decision of an operator, by detecting the highest or lowest tonal value of all tonal picture data of a process and thus deciding the tone level between the concerned range to be finally obtained and the background part on the basis of the detected tonal value. CONSTITUTION:The highest density value is obtained through the highest value detecting circuit 1 and from the original variable density data train obtained before setting a concerned range ROI given through an input terminal 1. On the basis of the highest density value and the original data, a histogram data divided equidistantly is obtained through a histogram converter 2. This histogram data is smoothed through a smoothing circuit 3 and applied to the 1st density value detecting circuit 4.
