PURPOSE:To improve the hardenability and quality, by cooling a continuously conveyed hot metallic material with a cooling water nozzle equipped with an ultraosonic vibrator at an initial cooling section, and with a cooling water nozzle unequipped with the ultrasonic vibrator at a cooling section on the outlet side of the apparatus. CONSTITUTION:A hot metallic material 5 is water-cooled by a titled cooling apparatus for metallic material while the metallic material 5 is continuously conveyed. At an initial cooling section wherein the metallic material 5 still keeps a high surface temperature, an upper cooling water nozzle 8 equipped with an ultrasonic vibrator is arranged; at a cooling section on the outlet side of the apparatus, the surface temperature of the metallic material 5 is already reduced down, so that a cooling water nozzle 9 unequipped with an ultrasonic vibrator is arranged. Then, the water pump 11 is started and the cooling water is sprayed upon the surface of the hot metallic material 5.
