Abstract

PURPOSE:To stably manufacture a rolled product with a uniform quality, by detecting on-line the thickness of solidified shell of a cast ingot, by determining the rolling position on the basis of the said thickness, and by controlling at least either one of the casting condition and the rolling condition, at rolling an unsolidified cast ingot directly following a continuous casting process. CONSTITUTION:A molten metal 2 is poured from a tundish 1 into a casting space formed by a casting groove 4' of a rotary wheel 4 and an endless belt 5; an unsolidified ingot 50 is continuously taken out of the casting space and is rolled by rolling rolls 25, 26. Hereupon, the thickness of the solidified shell of the unsolidified cast ingot 50 is detected by an ultrasonic thickness detector 16 whose signal is then sent to a rolling position information processor. On the basis of this thickness, the rolling position is determined, and at least either one of the casting condition and the rolling condition is controlled.
