Abstract

PURPOSE: A composition, obtained by polymerizing a water-soluble vinyl monomer in the presence of a specific high polymer latex, capable of forming a water- soluble flexible film having a high surface strength, suitable for a surface sizing agent, and having improved storage stability.
CONSTITUTION: A composition obtained by polymerizing (B) at least one water- soluble vinyl monomer in the presence of (A) a high polymer latex having a glass transmission point ≤60°C, preferably ≤40°C, at a solid weight ratio between the components (A) and (B) of (3:97)W(90:10), preferably (5:95)W(80:20). The polymerization is carried out radically by using only a perioxide, e.g. potassium persulfate; however, the redox polymerization is carried out by using the perioxide with a reducing agent, e.g. acid sodium sulfite. After the completion of the polymerization, the resultant polymer is neutralized with caustic soda, an amine compound or hydrochloric acid.
USE: A warp sizing agent, textile processing (finishing) agent, adhesive, etc.
