Abstract

In separating solids from a liquid by settling or flotation, the liquid is made to flow generally horizontally through a tank, and means at the inlet or outlet zone of the tank impose a velocity gradient on the flow. In settling, the velocity increases upwards in the tank (Fig. 3), and in flotation the velocity will decrease upwards to enhance separation.
