Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove oxygen safely from a gas containing the oxygen and unsaturated hydrocarbons, by selectively hydrogenating the gas in the presence of a catalyst, having a long life, and containing silver, gold or a compound thereof and a compound of an alkali metal.
CONSTITUTION: A gas containing oxygen and unsaturated hydrocarbons is brought into contaxt with a catalyst containing silver, gold or a compound thereof, e.g. silver nitrate or aurous chloride, and a compound of an alkali metal, e.g. potassium carbonate, in the presence of hydrogen to remove the oxygen from the gas containing the unsaturated hydrocarbons. The reaction temperature is 0W400°C, preferably room temperatureW300°C. The use of the catalyst causes almost no loss of the unsaturated hydrocarbons by the hydrogenation. The catalytic activity is stable for a long term, and a long-term continuous operation is possible.
