Abstract
PURPOSE:To precisely detect the presence or absence of any chip in the end part of throw-away tips with simple constitution by subjecting the output of a photoelectric transducer to signal processing only within the range around the throw-away tip. CONSTITUTION:While the angle of projected light 2 and the side of a throw-away tip 1 is being maintained, said tip is moved in an A direction, by which the entire end part of the tip 1 is imaged on a photoelectric transducer 4. The signal from the transducer 5 is taken into the memory of a microcomputer 8 via an A/D converter 6, and the difference between the output signal and the delayed output of this signal is taken only within the range from where the level thereof rises higher than a minimum level in the central area of the side of the throw-away tip in the rise part of the output signal up to where it lowers below the minimum level in the fall part of the output signal. The times when this differential output lowered below a set level are counted, and when the value thereof is larger than the set value, it is discriminated as a chip. Thereby, the chip is detected stably and surely.
