The signal from the transducer 5 is taken into the memory of a microcomputer 8 via an A/D converter 6, and the difference between the output signal and the delayed output of this signal is taken only within the range from where the level thereof rises higher than a minimum level in the central area of the side of the throw-away tip in the rise part of the output signal up to where it lowers below the minimum level in the fall part of the output signal. The times when this differential output lowered below a set level are counted, and when the value thereof is larger than the set value, it is discriminated as a chip. Thereby, the chip is detected stably and surely.
