Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an optical deflector which is small-sized and inexpensive, by placing a refractive index distributing lens having length of odd times 1/4 period length, in proximity of the projecting end of an optical fiber for transmitting a laser beam, and relatively displacing it in the direction meeting at right angles with the optical axis. CONSTITUTION:Light beams 15 of a laser 14 are made incident to a refractive index distributing lens 16 having length of 1/4 period length, is made to pass through an optical fiber 13, and is deflected and projected by a refractive index distributing lens 12 having length of 1/4 period length, which has been provided in proximity of its projecting end 13A. Scanning of the beam is executed by reciprocating the deflecting element 12 in the direction meeting at right angles with the optical axis through an electrostrictive element 17 installed on the side of the deflecting element 12. In this way, an optical deflector which is small-sized and inexpensive is obtained.
