Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily discriminate a boundary echo wave and a defect echo wave and improve the accuracy of detection by discriminating the phase of the echo waves and displaying phase inversion components thereof. CONSTITUTION:If ultrasonic waves are transmitted in a pulse-like manner into a material by applying ultrasonic driving current from a transmitter 3 to a transducer TD1 while moving the TD1, echo waves are received in the TD1 by the reflection from a boundary face (c) or a defect (d). In the case of scanning the TD1 in an F direction, the phase of the echo waves shows an in-phase first and when the TD1 moves up to the position where a defect echo wave is detected, the phase of the echo waves inverts to show an antiphase and is displayed as a difference in display color in a display device 8. Hence, in spite of infeasibility in the time separation of the defect echo waves owing to the location of the defect (d) near the boundary surface (c) or the like, the defect echo wave is easily discriminated by the difference in the colors appearing in the device 8.
