Abstract

PURPOSE: A combination of a specific sulfonic acid, an amine and a phosphine is used as a catalyst to produce polyethylene terephthalate polyester of less diethylene glycol content with high transparency and good color tone.
CONSTITUTION: After esterification of (A) the acid component mainly consisting of terephthalic acid with (B) the glycol component mainly consisting of ethylene glycol, the polycondenation reaction is conducted in the presence of a combination of (C) a sulfonic acid of the formula [R is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, halogen where, when R is other than halogen, it may be substituted with other groups such as NH2; m is 1W3], nonbenzenoid aromatic or heterocyclic sulfonic acid and/or their acid anhydrides such as methansulfonic acid, (D) an amine such as methylamine and/or (E) a phosphine such as methylphosphine where the molar content N and/or P become 0.2W4 times the molar quantity of the sulfonic group.
