Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent a crosstalk caused by coupling of an electromagnetic field between elemental optical fibers, by providing a high loss layer on the outside of elemental optical fiber, in a compound optical fiber consisting of many elemental optical fibers. CONSTITUTION:High loss layers 23a-23c, 26, 29 are provided on the outside of elemental optical fibers consisting of cores 21a-21c, 24, 27, and clads 22a-22c, 25, 28. A compound optical fiber is formed by arraying the elemental optical fibers in a triangular shape, a ribbon shape, or in a circular shape together with a dummy fiber 30, and melt-sticking the contact part. As for thickness of 23a, etc., several mum-ten and several mum is suitable, and this layer is constituted of a high loss material whose optical loss becomes >= several hundred dB/m. When the elemental optical fiber is produced by use of quartz, quartz glass containing iron, cobalt, copper, titanium, etc. whose melting point and expansion coefficient are almost same as those of quartz is desirable as said material.
