Abstract
PURPOSE:To detect flaws on the surface of hot steel materials precisely by heating the descaled surface of hot steel materials quickly and detecting the temperature of the surface in the direction along the surface. CONSTITUTION:Since an induction heating coil 1 is arranged in the direction of the width of a steel material 2, the distance between each part in the width direction on the surface of the steel material 2 and the induction heating coil 1 varies according to the width direction and thus the value of induction current, as well as the rise in temperature of the surface, varies with each part of the surface in the width direction, and the relative level of a peak P in relation to the smooth level thereof also varies according to the width direction. Therefore, smooth temperature distribution data (wherefrom the point P is omitted) is obtained from data on measured temperature, and based on the smooth temperature distribution data and on temperature distribution data including the flaw peak P, compensation in accordance with the form of the surface is applied by means of an electric circuit or an electronic device, whereby the flaws are detected automatically.
