Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a pipe made of an activated metal with an excellent inner surface condition without causing a seizure trouble, by practicing a hot extrusion process under a condition wherein a lubricating medium packed inside a billet and a mandrel are isolated from each other through a sleeve.
CONSTITUTION: A lubricating medium 2 is packed in a gap formed between the inner surface of a tubular billet 1 made of an activated metal and the outer surface of a sleeve 3 inserted into the billet 1. A tip of the sleeve 3 is extended out of the end plane of the billet 1 toward the extruding direction;a flange 3A is formed in another end of the sleeve 3 and is fitted into a cavity 1A formed in the end plane of the billet 1; hereby, the leak of the lubricating medium 2 toward the opposite direction to the extrusion is intercepted. This assembly A of the billet and sleeve is inserted into a container 5, a mandrel 11 is fully inserted into the assembly A, and a hot extrusion is practiced. Hereupon, the extrusion is carried out under a condition wherein the sleeve 3 is isolating the mandrel 11 from the lubricating medium 2 packed in the inner surface of the billet 1, so that the lubricating medium 2 does not cause a change in its viscosity during the extrusion process, and the generation of scratch flaws is diminished.
