Abstract

PURPOSE: A liquid crystal composition with excellent order.parameter, absorption factor, stability and solubility exhibiting a red color, which is prepd. by the incorporation of a specified anthraquinone pigment.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. of formula I (wherein Y is halogen, aryloxy or sulfo) is reacted with a compd. of formula II (wherein X is O or S; R is halogen, nitro, cyano, alkylphenyl, alkoxyphenyl, alkylcyclohexyl, alkylbenzyloxy, aryloxyalkoxy, acyloxy, carbamoyl having a secondary or tertiary amino group, etc. when X is O, and H, hydroxyl, alkyl or alkoxy when X is S) in the presence of an acid-finding agent such as an alkali carbonate or a caustic alkali, to obtain an anthraquinone dye of formula III. Then the anthraquinone dye is incorporated in a guest-host type liquid crystal.
