Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled polymer having high molecular weight, in high polymer conversion, by the use of a polymerization catalyst obtained by the photo-irradiation of a mixture of a VI-group transition metal carbonyl and an organic halide.
CONSTITUTION: A VI-group transition metal carbonyl, pref. molybdenum hexacarbonyl is mixed with an organic halide (e.g. carbon tetrachloride), and the mixture is irradiated with, e.g. a 100WW1kW high-pressure mercury lamp. The objective polymer is obtained by polymerizing 2-chloro-1-phenylacetylene (e.g. the compound of formula (A is alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, etc.; n is 0W5) in the presence of pref. 0.1W 10mol%, based on the monomer, of the catalyst obtained above. As an alternative method, the preparation of the catalyst and the polymerization are carried out simultaneously by using 2-chloro-1-acetylene as the halide.
