Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain high axis-alignment precision through easy adjusting operation by butting and arranging tips of two optical fibers in groove having a desired open groove angle, and by finely moving them in contact with an electrostrictive element applied with a voltage. CONSTITUTION:A couple of support bases 3 are used to set tips 2 of two optical fibers 1 with their axes aligned. The support base 3 has a groove 4 having a 90 deg. open groove angle, and on one flank, a fitting part 6 whose upper end approaching the height of the groove 4 is provided. On the upper end of the fitting part 6, an electrostrictive element 8 having a contact surface 7 is fitted slantingly with an adhesive 9, and the contact surface 7 is provided at right angles to the bisector M of the open groove angle of the groove 4. Applying a voltage to the element 8 moves finely the tip 2 of the fiber 1 set in the groove 4, as shown by the arrow, in the direction of the bisector M with the strain of the element 8. Thus, the cores of the fibers are aligned to each other.
