Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the diameter of a rotary cylinder, by providing >=3 magnetic heads to the rotary cylinder and performing the recording and reproducing of a field with optional one of said magnetic heads and >=1/2 rotation of the cylinder. CONSTITUTION:Four magnetic heads are provided around a rotary cylinder with a phase of 90 deg.. With the first 3/4 rotation of the cylinder from the 1st state, the signals of a field are recorded or reproduced by a head 13. For other heads, a connection is broken to the signal line respectively while the head 13 is driven. Then the cylinder rotates by 3/4, and thus a head 15' records or reproduces the signals of the next one field on a video track 23. After this, the signals of a field are recorded or reproduced in the same way on each video track through heads 13' and 15 respectively at every 3/4 rotation of the cylinder. As the recording of a field is carried out at every 3/4 rotation of a rotary cylinder, the diameter of the cylinder can be reduced.
