When a single-pulse count value reaches a prescribed value, a play state is set through a CPU12 and the 1st recording and reproducing head 11 reproduces a desired sound block on the 1st track. In rewind mode, a block is similarly reproduced and while no influences of noises are exerted, invariably accurate tape position detection is achieved by counting single pulses without an error in counting.
