Abstract

PURPOSE: On the production of the titled substance by the condensation reaction between a phenol and a ketone, a sulfonic acid type cation-exchange resin that is partially modified with 3-pyridinemethanethiol is used as a catalyst to increase the reaction rate.
CONSTITUTION: Using a sulfonic acid type cation-exchange resin partially modified with 3-pyridinemethanethiol as a condensation reaction catalyst, the titled substance is produced from a phenol and a ketone. The sulfonic acid type cation-exchange resin is made from a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer, perfluoroethylene polymer, or phenol-formaldehyde polymer. One of these polymers is previously converted to the H-type, throughly dried and modified with 3-pyridinemethanethiol in a solvent such as phenol or methanol at 50W100°C. The condensation reaction is usually conducted using an excessive amount of a phenol at 60W100°C under normal to 5 atmospheric pressure.
