Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a honeycomb formed body of an activated carbon precisely by kneading cut fibers of a thermosetting resin having a ratio of the fiber length to the diameter which is equal to or below a specific value with a thermosetting binder and forming this mixture into a honeycomb like shape, then, drying it, and ativating it by heating after carbonized in a nonoxidizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Into thermosetting cut fibers having ≤80 ratio of the fiber length to the diameter, a thermosetting binder is added and kneaded, and this mixture is extended into a honeycomb shape. For the thermosetting resin, a resin of a phenol type, or a furan type, or a xylene-formaldehyde type or the like is used, and for the thermosetting binder, an adhesive agent of a phenol resin, or a melamine resin, or a formaldehyde resin or the like is used. After this honeycomb formed body is dried, this body is carbonized in a nonoxidizing atmosphere at about 500W1,100°C, then activated in an oxidizing atmosphere by the conventional method.
