Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce stainless steel powder of good formability with high yields by subjecting the austenitic stainless steel having been solid solution-treated to sensitization treatment under specific conditions and etching the same with a mixed acid soln of nitricacid and hydrofluoricacid of proper concns.
CONSTITUTION: The austenitic atainless steel having been solid solution-treated is heated for 10W20hr at 630W700°C in an oxidation-free or reducing atmosprere, after which it is slowly cooled down to ordinary temp. The stainless steel having undergone such sensitization treatment is immersed in an etching soln. of 20±5% nitric acid concn. in the soln. and 3±0.5% hydrofluoric acid concn., whereby intergranular corrosion is caused and the stainless steel in made into powder. The stainless powder obtained by this method has a gain size distribution of about ≥90% 250-mesh undersize, and since no mechanical size reducing means are used after the intergranular corrosion, the hardness of the powder is low. The high powder density at the compression molding makes the formation of cracking or the like in the molding virtually none.
